Re: Yee-Haw, a Groundbreaker-X fo my \'Bota

Thanks Bird, I'll be gone again Monday for at least a week so it may be here before I am back.

Dale, after popping a few smaller roots, I was really surpised to see the actual diameter of the large ones. Thats when my strategy really came to fruition. I broke out the chain saw. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bob, that looks like it's less than half the size of mine. I'm learning real quick.

As the picture will testify, I had to break off the dig and get the lawn cut. Dismounting the hoe is quite easy. Replacing the 3ph lift arms and sway chains, I am going to get small snap rings (if I can find them) for the lifting arms where my tractor has key chain type rings. I was happy to see that my sprayer, which has a really wide base as the pins are bolted to it and did not present any difficulties. Thus quashing the rumour that the 4 point subframe assembly reduces the spread of the lifting arms. Swapping it all back out the other way, (MMM is still the most challenging) the hoe is really easy to put back on. Like the FEL, with little practice, I bet one could do it in less than 2 minutes. All in all, it's quite the little unit! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Yee-Haw, a Groundbreaker-X fo my \'Bota

I too have had one for about 2 weeks now. It does a good job. We just completed a swimming pool and I am doing all kinds of trenching and the like for the landscaping. Have busted several sprinkler lines, telephone line and had to call the cable company! Also dug a large black locust stump, just got to be patient. I was concerned about the seat placement since I am 6'5", but there is absolutely no problem.

Re: Yee-Haw, a Groundbreaker-X fo my \'Bota

I have removed about 40 stumps so far I have a Kubota L4400 with a backhoe on subframe. When you aproach a stump you need to guage the size of the stump if it is small enough then you can scoop it. However most of the time you will need to cut the roots that are away from the stump and trench down deep on the sides. Once the stump starts to loosen you will be able to pull it out. I do it this way so that I can reduce wear and tear on the tractor. When the stump is out I take the dirt off the root ball for burning and when you fill the hole ensure that you fill it above grade so that when it settles the ground will be level.

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif No, I didn't power wash it! I think most of the dirt shook off from my attempts to pull it out after digging all around it. There was one sideways root about 4" thick that went back to another tree a foot or so beyond this stump that was tough to break. That's the piece you can see lying beside the stump. And the area where the stump was is under tree cover so the soil was more like peat moss.

Around here we have Digsafe, a toll free number you are supposed to call to get your utilities marked out before you go digging too deep. Saves you from busting water mains or worse, hitting a gas main and blowing up your house! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I figure it's pretty safe digging out stumps in the back yard but I'll be calling before I do any major excavations!
