Yellow Jacket traps....wish me luck!

Richard doesn't seemed inclined to try the Rescue traps, which I have recommended twice before on his threads. Seems to want to do his own thing rather than what we know to work. Too bad. I have also had great success with the Rescue traps. Best to use them in the spring just as the weather warms up to catch the queens.

I HAVE used the Rescue traps. My suspicion is I might have used them too late, had them in bad locations or simply had bad luck with them. (probably bought them too late)

I don't recall having the first yellow jacket in them. I put about 5 of them out.

I also have the understanding that these traps are better in the early season when the queens alone are vamping about as contrasted with later in the season when her "family" starts to visit.

I've just been quiet about about the bad luck I've personally had with them since it's probably more of something I did rather than anything against the traps.

same here with the rescue traps, tried early spring when others were posting that they started catching, all it seems I got was flys and bugs in general, once after a month or so got one worker sized yellow jacket. seems the best method I have had is to keep frying every nest I find when I find them... last year being the problem as I was laid up with back surgery and could not walk for near 3 months let along get out and chase bees probably why they are so much more nasty this year....

Glad you tried the Rescue traps, sorry they weren't more successful.

At our place, I have one magical spot that catches 90% of them year after year, so it is important to move them around to find what works. My magic spot is in the corner of the property, close to a Christmas tree farm. My place has timber, another neighbor grows nursery stock and a third grows hay, but it is close to the tree farm that always does the trick.

It is also important to put the trap in the sun. Some do escape, but the hotter it is inside, the faster they die.

I have been using the Rescue traps for about 15 years now and they have never failed me.

Here in Oregon, we don't start to see or catch the queens until daytime high temps get consistently into the upper 70's, which for us is usually late May. Exceptions exist. One year the forecast was for 80 or so in April for one or two days & I got huge portion of my year's catch on one day.

I only use the pheromone Rescue provides.

Rescue says to replenish the pheromone after a couple weeks, but I find they still attract the critters for a week or two more. But it is important to keep the pheromone charged up during prime trapping season. The Rescue pheromone only works on yellowjackets, so if you have another kind of wasp, they won't work. Since Rescue is a western company, I also wonder if the pheromone doesn't work on eastern yellowjackets. You can call the company and ask them. I have talked to them and they seem to really know what they are talking about.

I urge you to keep trying and I wish you luck. These things do work.

The Rescue traps work just dandy in the east! I set out about 5 traps this year and caught about two dozen queens, early in the season (April-May). But one or two of the traps only caught one or two queens. Later in the season (August), I begin to catch workers (lots of them).

You are absolutely correct about placement - as they say in the instructions, if you haven't caught anything in a particular location after a few days - try another location. It is also important to follow their instructions about sun - the best spots are where they get morning sun and afternoon shade.

Rescue also markets a "long-life" cartridge in addition to the little tubes of pheromone. The best I can figure, the "cartridges" are a medium density cotton-like material that will hold more of the pheromone. I use the cartridges excusively now, but re-charge them about once a month with the little tubes of pheromone.

Meat tenderizer will work on stings, but I'm not sure about yellow jackets since I believe they bite and not sting.
