Yikes...there is a ? in the house!

Standing at the kitchen sink today and suddenly noticed something out of the corner of my eye. A slender 4-legged critter about 10 - 12 inches long crawled out from under the cellar door. When it noticed me...it headed back to where it came from. The first thing that came to mind was to get on the net and identify what I am about to deal with. From the information gathered, I think it is a Mink......NOW what do I do?

Mink, Weasel, Fisher, all the same family. Not to worry. He won't stay. Probably just mousing. Not known to take up residence in human habitation.
Wild critters all the way. Not like a rat or something.

Get rid of the mice first before you get rid of this guy ... he's doing you a favour!

Weasels and minks are as fast as greased lightening. When they run across you while you are sleeping you will barely feel it.

Thanks whistlepig.....will no doubt be a sleepless one tonight:confused2:. We do have our sessions with mice from time to time....usually trap 3 or 4 then wait till the next year and do it all over again . The wife is a little less than pleased after I filled her in on todays encounter...

Furry critters don't bother my wife. Snakes are a whole different story. When I watch nature programs and they show a snake the covers her eyes with her hands. We had a weasel once in our basement where we used to live. We caught it with a Havahart trap baited with minnows from our creek.

I have a small Havahart trap.....will probably be setting it in the cellar in the near future. Minnows....from all the rain we have been getting lately, the streams are all running bank full. Maybe a visit to the local live bait shop will be in order.

Maybe we where lucky. We caught it the first night we set the trap. We released the weasel many miles from home. We consider weasels and minks good critters. Skunks and racoons are at the low end of our critter opinion poll.
