Minks are usually only near water. Weasel for sure I'd say. Let him eat all the mice and then use a havahart trap to catch him and relocate. Just not near poultry!

I have a buddy who used to be in the diary business. He always said there was nothing better than having a weasel in the dairy barn to keep rats and mice away.

From the sounds of it....I need to consider myself fortunate to have this critter hanging around. Now if I can just convince the wife that we need to give our new pet a name and let it rule the cellar until it decides to move on.:D

.....something tells me that closing up the gap between the kitchen floor and bottom of the cellar door will be put on my honey-do list.....

The wife is a little less than pleased after I filled her in on todays encounter...

Over the years I've learned that information on small furry things is classified. Talked about on a need to know basis only. There are two categories around here. Mouse (sometimes large mouse) if my wife has spotted it in the house. If it was kind of big and spotted in the yard then it might be classified as "unknown, possibly a kitten" ;) And no, my wife doesn't buy this for a second. Either way it is dealt with discretely to avoid causing excessive concern.
Last year we had some really bold mice in the yard by the wood shed. Some days I might see a mouse several times and one might even stop to stare at me. They were collectively referred to as Stuart Little, as if there was only one of them. Stuart was found plugging the spout of the watering can last August. :( Fortunately I was around to deal with this.

I'm retired and live in the old farm house I grew up in. There's always a weasel living under the barn and also a snowshoe hare that lives on the farm too.
The weasel is a great mouser and he likes it when I shoot red squirrels.
The snowshoe hare likes the clover in the yard and lack of predators.

I had a martin once that attacked one of my cats. It almost killed the cat in about a second and a half, then was gone. The cat survived, but the marten was going for the throat and almost did the job.
