YM 1700 cooling questions and other things

when I got my 1700 3 1/2 years the reservoir bottle had a dime size hole in the bottom corner ( the side against the radiator ) the hole almost looked burned through from the heat of the rad, but i was also aware the bottle was over 30 years old so it was brittle as well,
I redone the tractor but couldn't find the resource to get a replacement, so I started looking around the house and found my wifes cleaning supplies,;) I found a Pine-sol bottle that compared close to the same size as the reservoir bottle, the pine-sol bottle was of much heavier gauge and design, as I said it's been 3 1/2 years now and has been working well, however I had to tape the lid to stay on,:D
Oh! BTW the bottle is 48 onces

Hey DND. Curious Still CRS Are you running a Water Pump or did you have to add it after the loader install ??

Hey Carey, No never did install a water pump, though I did want to in the beginning, not that it has ever ran hot because of or due to the FEL, but more so because I thought would be better to circulate the water, Then... after reading about how well the cooling system is designed to work without a pump I never bothered to pursue installing one, I have ran it a bit warm a few times due to clogged fins on the radiator not allowing good airflow through, But even with having a water pump wouldn't help with a clogged radiator, ( I don't think! )

That reservoir isn't essential. It may have been optional on YM1700. Cars from 50 years ago just had expansion space above the water in the radiator and I expect your Yanmar was the same.

I tried a cube-shaped replacement reservoir and couldn't make it fit, so I used a Nalgene bottle like the ones that fit on a bicycle. (and in my case, I re-used the lid off the original cracked bottle.) A large hose clamp secures the bottle to the original mounting pad in front of the radiator.

It doesn't make any difference if it is in front or behind the radiator. Capacity: about a pint.

I'm not convinced YM1700 needs a water pump, especially because they worked fine for 30 years without one. Why add complexity? I would spend the equivalent on restoring the cooling system to original spec.

I agree, simple is better. I need to get all the kinks worked out and then maybe I can make upgrades. I bought the 1.5 qt reservoir, I think I have a solid plan for mounting.

I know you been on there sight and I don't recall if anyone mentioned it Puresol. Only Mix 25% Anti freeze to water ratio. Esp. in the summer here in Ga. Hoye Has a great read on the subject.;)

I saw that, and have seen other recommendations like 30/70. I was going with the 30/70 with cold weather coming. It appears that will give protection to 20 or a little lower. I was also thinking about purchasing a magnetic block warmer for the winter. What do you do? My tractor isnt inside, cant talk my wife into letting me bring it in the house, I dont have a barn, or garage yet.
How do I know if I have the right radiator? Are there any marking I should look for?

Right radiator? If it fits - good enough.

A block heater might be nice if you need to start it below 40 degrees but I wouldn't buy one immediately. As a substitute you can warm it with a hair dryer pointed at the head for a few minutes, and then at the air intake while you crank it. I expect a properly working Thermostart system will do anything you need - and it has the advantage that you can use it if the tractor isn't near an outlet.

Was this a local tractor? Maybe the previous owners found that it didn't need any starting aids at all.

I have a Ym2000 wich has a Water Pump so I run 50/50. My guess is that with the larger cylinders,More Hp. More Heat. Yanmar decided a better or more efficient cooling sys. was needed. You can use more Antifreeze in the Winter to prevent a freeze up but in the Summer the Antifreze will not Thermal siphon or circulate enough so 25% is recomendedfor it to cool properly. Mine is under a extension off my car port. Out of the Rain and Being Disabled If it's not 40-45 Deg. My _ S S isn't gonig outside anyways unless I have to LOL. so the Temp not a problem for me. I've owned it 5yrs. now and only used the Thermo Start a Handfull of times. I don't even have Reservoir and Ghetto'ed up a Quick connect. It works:D

He always had problems starting it. I have worked out some kinks and have it starting reliably (down to 41). We will see what it does when it gets colder. My main concern, reason for the block heater, is freezing. It doesnt get really cold here often but we will see some nights in the teen's and single digits if it a hard winter. Which I expect. I dont have a enclosed shelter for my tractor.
