I found a very clean and nice YM 2000 with 2TR20A engine, that has serious blow by and needs a long squirt of starter fluid to start. Seems fairly common with these. I talked to Hoye and they tell me $350 for refresh parts less pistons. The hydraulics and everything work great, nice seat, paint, steering wheel, nearly new tires. Transmission, clutch, brakes, diff and all seem very solid and the tractor will actually run fairly decent once started. It is supposedly an 80's model, it's red with a white stripe where the YANMAR is. It's 2wd. Asking price is $2100, might get him down a couple bills but he ain't going far. Is it worth a roll of the dice or no?

If it were me, I would do it. That's a couple thousand less than a clean tractor that doesn't need anything.

If ether has been used in it, the ring lands in the pistons are likely shattered. Rings likewise. So budget some money to repair that.

And - before overhauling the engine I would try the cheapskate approach. Look for my posts in this thread. I installed a direct-replacement much stronger starter from a larger Yanmar which cranks so vigorously that I think it would start any YM2000 regardless of condition. Once your rig starts reliably you might decide to just run heavy oil and put it in service as-is, particularly if you only need it a few hours per year.

We've read here several times: don't use ether in the small Yanmars!

most yanmars do NOT need ether and its not a common thing either!! Those are guys that are use to big diesel equiptment.

Also if its a ym2000 its a 78 or 79 they did not make them into the 80s.

If you can do the work it could be a good deal. If it has "serious" blow by I would plan on making repairs and keeping the old starter. :D

Yes, if you get it make the repairs. You will likely have much more power. Don't know the condition of the loader , New loader is 3-4K. IMO, It would be a good deal

The fairly common thing I meant was blow by, also saw a bunch of slow start issues. Of course you don't read about guys with perfect running tractors, they have no reason to post. LOL

u can get those VN loaders for less than $2k so if that's what it is don't use the $3k figure.

oh ok I got ya. I deal with loggers and those guys will run equipment on ether till it catches!!! Like when there starting an old diesel on a cold day they will run the engine on ether till the engine starts fireing on diesel. I have also seen when they change filter and take injectors out instead of bleeding the fuel they just run it on ether till it bleeds itself. Just spray some in there start it and then hold the ether down while it runs till all the air is bled!!!
