YM 2310d generator to alternator conversion?

Has anybody done this? I have a YM 2310D with the standard dynamo/regulator setup that has gone kaput. I'm interested in going to a 1 wire GM alternator. Anybody here done this?

There are several who have changed the dynamo to an alternator if you search the forum you will find others like this or this. This seems to be a rather popular "upgrade" as the regulators are kind of pricey.

Well, went back and reread my directions and explanation and was surprised at my details. I did not respond earlier, because my advanced aged brain could not remember the details.

For what it's worth from what I can remember the changeover is really quite simple if you have the alternator sitting there. I think the basic difference lies in whether you care that it may not look quite original or whether you have the space under the hood.

Another possibility to explore - Yanmars a little older than yours used the same Hitachi charging gear that Hitachi also sold to Nissan during the same years. You might find that Autozone has your alternator for $29.95 (rebuilt) except cataloged as a Datsun/Nissan part from your tractor's year.

The way to verify this is take in your regulator and see if it looks like Autozone's. My regulator tested identical on Autozone's test equipment, same plug and everything, so I bought the corresponding Nissan/Hitachi 35 amp alternator to replace my dead 15 amp original Yanmar/Hitachi one. It was a perfect fit.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. My engine has that U shaped hose behind the existing generator. I could make brackets to go above that. I also found this small alternator on Ebay that might work out. Looks just like the one GT14 used on his conversion.

Hey California, I know what some of these tractors actually came with an alternator originally. Mine however is a dynamo connected to a voltage regulator which also has a small box connected to it. I'm looking to leave all that behind for a single new GM alternator. It sounds like you were able to replace just the voltage regulator on your tractor and get back to work, right?

Yours has the little pancake alternator? I don't know the solution for that one.

Sad story - the space under the mechanical regulator on my YM240 was packed solid with hardened mud when I bought it, apparently a mud-dauber encampment. So I hit it with the pressure washer as part of my initial 'renovation'. Big mistake. That model regulator had big high-current resistors under there, mounted external for cooling, that my cleaning shorted out. They soon went up in smoke then the alternator soon followed.

I bought a new $70 regulator from a participant here then on a hunch took it to Autozone. It tested perfect when described as '72 Datsun - plug and all. So I bought that model alternator from them. My source for the regulator has always provided excellent service so I didn't send it back for refund, but I noted that Autozone's version of the same part was $19.

I had hoped a conversion like this would work for you, but it sounds like you don't have space for an ordinary automotive alternator.

I did this on my 2301D awhile back. I used the Denso alternator but had to build an idler pulley and bracket to get by the radiator hose problem. It was pretty simple and works great. I may have some pictures if you care about looking.
