Remember how spring steel works.. if it's good metal, and not pushed past it's plastic deformation point.. it should return to original shape. Look at valve springs...

Clutches have come with blocking timber for decades.. Byt he time your clutch springyness is shot.. my guess is you will need discs too...

I don't see any kind of locking mechanism on the 1700. Although I have never had any problems with winter coming up the tractor does not get near as much use. Do you have your 1700 clutch blocked? If so how did you do it?

Most of my tractors that are gonna set for extended times, like my 2n allis G and others.. have the clutch blocked. It doesn't take much to push the pedal and shove a stick or wood block into the linkage to keep it from returning. A concrete block fits nicely on a ford running board... What ever works.. works.. My ex nh 1920 had a wood wedge with a string attached to it. etc..

I did not think I had a locking mechanism either until I looked closely on my 1510D and there is a wire loop that holds the clutch down to the foot rest. I have been looking at this thread and actually was suprised to find it as I had never noticed it before. My tractor lives outside so I locked the clutch down and covered it just before the rain showed up at the farm - for the first time in 70 days.

You know, I understand why they block the clutch plate down, to keep the disc from rusting to the flywheel, but it seems like after a while that would stretch and weaken the clutch pressure plate springs, and you'd have to replace that PP early...........

That is highly unlikely. I have an Enfield muzzle loader that is 150 years old. The blade spring actuating the hammer is under constant tension. After 150 years you will be ill advised to put your hand under the hammer and pull the trigger! This is with 150 year old metallurgical technology. The steels and manufacturing processes of today are so much better that I seriously doubt that the springs will lose their temper by blocking the clutch down. Like Soundguy said. Only if you push it past it's plastic deformation point.
