Yanmar ym2000
I have a ym2000 I bought a air filter from Napa 6024 I think.
they did not have a cross ref. on the yanmar filters the old one had alot of metal on and around it the new one is all plastic. they matched on size. the problem is i have found dust on the inside of filter as it is not sealing properly. does anyone know of a good replacement make and model#.

NAPA #2297 works on my YM2000B, however if you have an original Yanmar filter, they are very expensive and re-washable many times over in hot soapy water.

When I got my 1700.. there was a fram filter in it, with an extra piece of weatherstripping foam stuck around it on one side.. presumably to make it 1/4" taller... I too could not find an exact crossover.. I did however find some decent aftermarket filters onthe internet..

Soundguy,

Was the tractor sold to you as 'factory reconditioned', with this non-stock filter arrangement?

I've seen some similar stuff recently while trying to buy correct authentic used hard parts from a 'reconditioned' importer to get my tractor back to bone-stock. I had to take half the stuff back.

No California my Yanmar ym2000 was sold to me as a fixer upper grey market tractor with new front end loader. I bought it from coldwater tractors they import the tractors build the loaders and install them on the tractors. I got what I believe to be a very good deal. I put a new battery new cables, alternator, fluids, filters, rear work light. rear scraper blade, a few misc. nuts bolts. I drove 1550 miles to pick it up and bring it home. bought it site unseen, probabaly not the smartest thing I've ever done. The guy was honest so It all worked out. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes and no. I bought the tractor from the owner.. who I gues did a container shipoment as a way to make some money.. he brought them in.. and then sold them off.. and they were represented to him as factory recon.. and he passed that info along.. .. but didn't say that HE reoned them.. same thing though.

@When i got mine home, I noticed the alternator didn't work, and the oil sender leaked after an hour of use.. also the 3pt control had no rubber tension disc.. so wouldn't stay up. They were easy fixes, and the tractor never really had any other troubles. I found a matching alternator and vr at a mom-n-pop shop.. picked them up for80 bucks and then fixed it all myself.. worked great. That was my first tractor so I was 'ignorant' to all the facts about what to look for.. dealer vs reseller/private seller/... 'refurbed units'.. etc. As always.. time and experience has made me a bit more savy now /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Tell you what I need. I need a rear main seal for my YM1500. I am assuming that it is replaceable once I break the tractor apart and that I don't have to disassemble the engine. Am I assuming correctly?

Garyd,
That's what we all hope to buy, a tractor that is fairly described and is a good value for the price. I'm glad you found a good dealer.

My purchase was similar. The short term second owner I got mine from gave up renovating minor stuff before he accomplished very much, and sold it to me at a reasonable price. The only significant problem turned out to be very simple: very old fuel which caused hard starting. That had caused him to buy a new (expensive!) starter and he gave up at that point without determining the cause.

Soundguy,
The place I went for my 'original' restoration parts is also a container importer, and I encountered similar minor problems.

The importer had a nice looking 'reconditioned' YM2000 that was being stripped for parts after a warranty exchange. I'll give him major points for treating that customer very well.

I got a seat with nice upholstery off his YM2000, then discovered it wouldn't fit my tractor. It's mount had been cut off and moved 2 inches inward. I can't swap the seat cover because this seat is much smaller. I can't use this 'reconditioned' seat. I don't understand why reconditioning included butchering the mount.

The other thing I bought on that visit was a complete fuel filter assembly. (My tractor had been maintained with NAPA parts replacing Yanmar parts, and had an auto fuel filter in place of the Yanmar filter assembly.) The used Yanmar filter assembly off that YM2000 contained a filthy filter element. Not 'reconditioned' like the tractor's nice appearance suggested.

So I bought a genuine Yanmar filter element for it but discovered it wouldn't fit this assembly - the filter assembly from that YM2000 had a shorter filter bowl, one superceded years before the apparent year model of the tractor I saw it removed from.

The VN reconditioned tractors I have seen show the model number in a round medallion next to the radiator. According to my YM240 parts book the medallion was first used about 1981. But this first-series fuel filter bowl, and the right-side oil dipstick on that YM2000, indicated an engine from 1975 or before. I think the VN reconditioners have so many tractors to pull parts from that they take later sheet metal, with that medallion, and put it on tractors from all years. Buyer beware!

1danny,
re what parts do I need:
I want an authentic reupholstered seat, eventually.

Also I will eventually buy that longer second-series fuel filter bowl. That's the last part I need to install the genuine Yanmar filter assembly. For now I have two fresh non-stock filter assemblies installed in series so no hurry.

(That was a separate surprise - A brand new 'Yanmar fuel filter assembly' I bought on ebay from a large dealer was generic, and won't take Yanmar elements - or any element available from NAPA etc so far as I can determine. See the attached photo. Since I didn't know the quality of this generic filter, I added it in series with the automotive filter I had just replaced.)

I hope all this doesn't scare off a potential Yanmar buyer. None of this was serious or expensive. Most of the time I spent was trying to achieve perfect authenticity, rather than improve usefulness of the tractor.
Now that everything works smoothly, my resale value is considerably more than what I have into it. The tractor runs great, and I'm pleased!

California.. I noticed similar things after I got looking. My two front wheels were the same size, etc.. but two different rims.. Also.. my fuel bowl was yanmar.. but was from a different model, as the oem yanmar 1700 filter I ordered didn't fit it either. I had to go match one up at napa.

Mine is an older late 70's green model... I've not seen one like it since.

Soundguy,

There was a brochure on ebay that I think describes first-series YM195, the US version of your green YM1700.

The auction ended with no bids so it may still be available.

California, most parts for your YM240 are still available from Yanmar, I keep many of them in stock. The OEM fuel filter that came on your YM240 is 2 5/8" long. I also have the longer filters & bowl's if you want that. The air & oil filter's are still available too. We ship these parts every day.

Danny, I have a new correct fuel filter element 104500-55710 still in Yanmar packaging.

It measures 2 5/8 as you noted. At the next filter maintenance I'll get an oem bowl so I can finally install this in place of the cobbled-together stuff I'm using now.

Thanks for your advice. I hope to do business with you some day.

The closest match I have found for the YM2000 air filter is a Wix 46022. The filter is just a little too short. I compensated for this by adding a circular ring cut out from a sheet of rubber gasket material. It seems to work just fine. The rubber gasket material secures a tight fit on the filter.

That sounds like how my air filter was done up on my 1700..
