Can anyone tell me if wile my tractor is running and I turn the key to the off position will the alternator still charge the battery. Thanks

Put a voltmeter on the battery with the key on and off and see what you get.

Don't ask how I learned this .... an old battery in poor condition will barely start the tractor if the key was off while you worked all morning before you stopped for lunch.

So no, there is no charging while the key is off.

Maybe mine has a short or something grounded that shouldn't be, but if I leave the key 'on' and not switched 'off' it will pull the battery down after a few sessions.

If the motor is running, which means the alternator is spinning then yes you are charging.
