X2 Ow.

I guess that the mystery metal is the remains of that bearing race, and that would explain both the chipped piston skirt and the ovalized piston wear.

Always nice to find a cause!

Nice job.

All the best,

Peter

Indeed a bearing race or 2 would provide enough shrapnel in the oil pan. As the piston goes up, the head would wear on one side, then as the crank pulled it down, the piston head would wear on the opposite side.

Good detective work. 🕵️‍♂️

Guess I'll just keep disassembling for now and see where we go from here.

Took the rear main housing off and started to realize just how bad this is going to be. If I'm not mistaken, this was a circle when it started and the bearing/crank did not have an 1/8" of play to bounce around.

This gets more interesting by the moment. That really does explain the weird wear patterns on the crankshaft and pistons, as well, of course, as the debris. I can't believe the previous owner didn't notice, but we are all different...

All in all, a real testament to the strength of the Yanmar design and metal.

On the bright side, that is a replaceable/rebuildable flange.

Thanks for sharing.

All the best,

Peter

Picked up a pulley puller today and got the timing gear cover off. More broken things.

Yikes!

I guess that you are going to really know that engine when you are finished with it. Do you think that this is the cause of the other failed bearing? It is hard to imagine that the oil pressure light wasn't lit up.

I’m guessing based on not much experience, but I think you may be correct. I did replace the oil pressure switch at some point, the light did come on, but I didn’t think much about it given the limited time I actually had the tractor running. I’ve been debating with myself whether I caused all this damage by prematurely trying to get it running, or if it ran this way for awhile before being parked. I don’t think I could wear that rear main seal housing that bad in the time I’ve been playing with trying to start it, but I definitely didn’t do it any favors.

I think it is hard to know. I always worry that I am never going to notice the idiot light come on, since I am so used to them not coming on.

I would like to think that there was enough oil in the bearings for them not to burn dry in a few minutes, but I am also sure that once the bearings heat up that it doesn't take long.

I only have one data point that is close; a friend was driving on a local urban interstate, where the exits are about a mile apart, and saw her oil pressure light come on. She though that she could make it to the next exit and didn't pull over. At the exit, she did pull over and stopped, at which time the engine seized completely. Unfortunately, that was the end of the car.

Al the best,

Peter
