I inadvertently turned the engine off using the ignition key. Now the engine will not crank using the starter, but the starter is pulling a lot of current. It is acting as if the starter gear is binding. I am thinking of removing and reinstalling the starter to see if that will free it up. Now I know why Yanmar says not to shut down the engine using the switch, but I don't know what happened. Anybody know?

A YM276D will not shut off with the key. You must have pulled the decompression cable or the throttle handle which shuts off the fuel. However you do have a starter problem, remove the starter and take it to a shop to be cleaned and have new brushes installed. I can supply you with brushes and any other parts you may require. Thanks for the quick reply. Here it gets complicated: I am representing the person who actually has the tractor, long distance. The tractor is in Hawai'i, I am in CA. The information I posted is what the owner told me. He says the manual specifies that using the switch to turn off the engine is not good. I have never heard of any engine, on boats or on cars, that has this limitation. Could it just be coincidence that the starter failed the moment the engine was shut down using the switch, if indeed the engine can be shut down in that way? Long distance diagnostics are a pain, but apparently the local help is not available at this time. At any rate, he is on his way to remove the starter. Regarding starter parts, what can you tell me about price, shipping, and availability?

Unless that tractor has a fuel shutoff solonoid, or an electric cut out for the injector pump.. a deisel engine won't shut off with the ignition key.. as there is no 'spark' to kill. Hard to say what someone may or may not have added to the tractor. The owner needs to look over al wiring throughly. The key switch on many of these units is simple.. just power on.. for any gauges.. etc.. and start position for the starter solenoid.
He can try the starter once it is pulled from the tractor to see if it spins. If so, he needs to get a voltmeter and see if he is getting power to the solenoid, and if he is getting power out the other side.
Also.. if he does have an electric fuel shutoff system.. he needs to check that ignition switch to make sure it is 'activating' the solenoid. Perhaps there are fuses in line that may have blown..
Let us know what is found.

Tell your friend to check his battery connections to the frame, starter and battery. I had a problem with the ground cable on mine.

It turns out that the PTO safety switch was tripped. Now that it's reset, the tractor stars up just fine. Thanks everyone for your time.
