All the talk on the " how do you deal with trespassers" thread about grabbing a weapon and running on down ta check-em out and the knothead shooting himself in that classroom awhile back folks moving out to their hobby farms in the country with a new tractor and maybe a new gun maybe their first gun kinda worries me some. The ANTI's dont need any help gettin our guns. Learn about your guns and have a good understanding of what you have in your hands and what it can do. I dont know how to post a link but at WWW. theboxotruth.com should shed some light to someone thinking about a new gun or any gun. Be careful out there and remember" YOU CANT CALL THAT BULLET BACK"

www.boxotruth.com, very cool site and very informative.

When the wife and I got hitched, I knew there would be guns in the home, still are. I took us all out to the local range and showed the kids what a gun can and will do. Many milk jugs of water later they did not want to be close to them, and far as I know they never touched them. shotgun, pistol, air rifle, bow and arrow, even a slingshot can be dangerous if used incorrectly.

I added the Link to Boxotruth. It's an interesting and enlightening website.

Although I really enjoyed the "Dirty Harry" flicks, they did set off a "bigger caliber is best" trend.

Now, don't get me wrong...I am a solid proponent of gun rights and own a few ("So...what kinda gun do you use for your house gun, Roy?" "Well, Orville...it depends on which room I'm in...").

However, home and self protection do not need a biggest baddest caliber around. Penetration through walls (especially in an apartment or town house...or any house) has got to be considered. I live in a log home, so penetration isn't as big a problem here as others with sheet rocked walls would have.

One interesting fact is most gun deaths are from .22 calibers. That caliber, in the gun world, is considered a mouse...yet it can and does kill quite a few folks. This discussion is not about the rights or wrongs of guns...just a fact of calibers. I'll not get into a discussion concerning anything off topic in this thread.

I do keep handguns loaded at areas of the house and a 12 gage (unloaded) close by. I use either low recoil 00 buck or a turkey round for inside defense. That's plenty, considering the range it would be used.
Even the handguns are relatively low calibers (.38 Special, 9 mm) since excessive penetration is still a consideration...although, as mentioned above, not as critical in my home as others.

So...any gun caliber can do serious damage if it hits a vital organ. One doesn't need a .480 S&W or .454 Casull. One has a right to own a big caliber, but don't let yourself be talked into a caliber that is way overkill for home or self defense. Another consideration...ever fired a weapon inside a building or room without wearing ear protection? You may hear again in a day or so... (don't ask how I know this)

BTW, my most frequently carried handgun is a .38 Spl revolver. Small, light and easy to shoot.

This thread is a good one...there was way too much talk in that "trespasser" thread about confronting them with a firearm at the ready.

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gifYep, even among young cops. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

But then when they started having to qualify on the range with the specific gun they carried, and such qualification requires some rapid fire, that ended the .44 magnum craze. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Similar to what you said, Roy, I always just stayed with the .38 specials; couldn't see any need for anything bigger.

It's a scary thought but I wonder sometimes how many people there are whose only training in firearms is what they see in the movies or on TV.

I agree completely and that is my personal favorite as well. For self-defense it's simple, reliable.....and honestly, if I can't defend myself with 5 shots then I'm probably as much of a danger as the aggressor.

Yeah, I have seen a couple of entertaining incidents at the shooting range. For example 1 guy thought he could shoot a 44 mag like Clint Eastwood. After recovering consiousness, an ambulance ride, and several stiches later in his forehead he decided that TV was a bit fake /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I had a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 caliber that had a tendency to "bite" someones nose with it's front site if they got a bit "loose in the wrist" while squeezing the trigger. Funny thing was, it only happened to them once /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif...then they wised up. It happened to me once too /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif- then I sold it and bought a Super Redhawk. Much better angle on the grip. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've played some with a cousin's S&W .44 magnum; fun to shoot, but since I don't have any expectations of going elephant hunting, I didn't see a practical use for it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif They do have a pretty good recoil, and to me at least, sound more like a .12 gauge shotgun than a pistol; loud boom instead of a sharp crack.
