Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

Thanks for the post and photo. I saw it, left TBN to google chainsaw chaps, found'm at a good price with free shipping (speedway.com) and for less than $60 and 15 minutes on line I'll have some in a few days.

Now if I could just be that efficient about the rest of life.... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

I'm wondering.. how many of you use your chainsaw bar lock.. does your chainsaw have one? I use mine like I would the safety on a rifle.. it's on until I'm ready to shoot. Basically.. you keep the bar-lock on until you & the chainsaw are in position & ready to cut.. once the cut is complete.. I kick the bar-lock back on. This way.. your chain is never moving unless it's positioned on the log ready to cut.

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

BTW, is the ground stll froze up there in Vermont? I'm driving up to Middlebury in a week or two to pick up a saw mill, and the road in is dirt and up a semi steep hill.

Yep RD,
Everything is froze solid. And Im only 20 mins SW of Rutland. We have had a lot of sub zero weather.

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

RD,

Glad to hear you're getting the chaps and safety equipment. I cut for years w/o most of it with no mishaps. I think of it like riding motorcycles. Odds are, if you do it long enough, something bad can happen. The older I get, the more I try to improve my odds.

VT Roads?... Well, it's March now. Forecast for the next week looks good to keep roads frozen. We've had a weird winter with 5 or more "mini" mudseasons in Jan-Feb. A lot of back roads are frozen rutted now. Hopefully, the weather will hold for another couple of weeks but traditionally, we get sugaring season starting by the 2nd week of March, or so. Good luck with the trip.

Scotty,

You beat me to the answer /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif and were much more concise!

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

kensfarm,

Yes, I do use the bar lock but, not as religiously as I should. It is definitely a good added safety measure, even though it's a tiny bit less convenient. Thanks for mentioning it for all.

BTW: I think my wife has a good friend near you. Do you know of a B&B in the area called "The Cinnamon House"?(fairly historic old house I believe)

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

By 'bar lock' are you referring to a chain brake? Just wondering if they are two different animals. My Echo has a brake, and I use it religiously.

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

I really never heard of it until you mentioned it.. looks like it's on Main Street in town.. I'll have to drive by when the Mrs. & I go out to dinner one evening.

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

There's a lot of good information on chaps and where to buy them in this thread.

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

I don't use the brake between cuts, unless I need to crawl over or through some downed tops or brush. But from cut to cut, I don't go through the extra motions (reach for the brake handle to engage it and again to dis-engage it). For me the brake is for a kick-back. To keep the chain from coasting around between cuts, I adjust the idle so the clutch isn't engaged.
