Whenthey first cameout, we were told it is NOT a parking brake. Sometime in the last couple decades that changed. Ive been told they are now teaching to set the brake if you are taking more than 2 steps. Old habits die hard,so I still don't set the brake.
My Husky manual says to shut the saw off before walking... yeah, right.`

Well, I may not be religious about the brake but, I do shut it off after making every cut, if I'm going to move more than a few inches. Never had a problem re-starting with one pull when my Huskys are warm. Admitted...a drop-pull is not the safest re-start but I've stumbled carrying it (bar back) on what I thought was even ground. I'd just as soon it was off if I'm going to move. It also gives me a few seconds to rest, and to be sure of my next footing position and best cut. Just my opinion.

The ultimate goal is to get the job done safely and go home afterwards. Your way works for you, and I've never been one to argue with success. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Take care.

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

Man this sounds so like my experience the only difference was my lecture came from the salesman when I was picking up my new saw. I told him I have cut hundreds of trees over the last 30 years and didn't need any chaps, well he sold them to me at cost so I threw a pair in the truck but didn't plan on using them cause I figured with a new saw and new chaps I'd look like "Johnny Wannabe". The next day I started clearing the lot for our new home and my wife said " aren't you going to put on your chaps? Well to make her happy I did and sure am glad cause not 20 minutes into it I slipped while limbing and the saw came down across my thigh, I couldn't believe how fast the it stopped! The next day I went back to the store for a new set of chaps (this time at retail) but I still gave the dealer the cut chaps to hang on the wall hoping it will inspire someone else to save their leg.

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

I got a set at menards last year and just bought a set for my son there also. $50 less 17% off at there winter sale. $43 insurance. I sure hope we NEVER have to buy another one BUT.....

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

I didn't mean to scare anyone with this thread, just show the chap scar, rather than what would have been my leg. At the least, as Beenthere says, they're good for pushing through the bramble and puckerbrush....at best they sure improve the odds.

If this thread convinced anyone to buy, AND WEAR, chaps and maybe saves just one more leg, I'm sure we'd all rather hear about torn chaps than torn up legs. 'nough said.

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

Scott & Tom,

Thanks for the info, bu it tlooks like i'm "porked" into pushing the trip back until the first week in April. It's this darn "Spring Break " hand wrenching/sweating that caused the postpone......which will most likely put me axle deep into the VT spring MUD. Arrgggg, Ft Lauderdale hasn't had a real Spring Break since 1988!!!
Should i shop for a winch, or just bring the laptop so i can send out a TBN SOS? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: You Don\'t Use Safety Chaps?

You convinced me.

I picked up a pair at Lowe's today. Even paid CA tax on them which is robbery since i am going to use them in OR.

Anyway, they were the Husqueverna brand, but some were made in Canada, while others were made in Mexico. I sorted through the boxes until I got a pair made in Canada.
