...you have to use a weedeater on your garden weeds

Mid-August in this territory is a tough time for gardens. Any weeds that have been overlooked use the summer rains and high humidity and turn into trees. The edges of the garden, overlooked in favor of more pressing garden chores, are out of control. So, this morning I debated between the lawn mower and a weed eater to see if I still had some vegetables.

At leaset it is looking a little better.

After years of gardening. using a roto tiller then the weeds would clog and spent more time cleaning the teeth of roto tiller than enjoying the garden. Then deer would have a meal before we got up so the peas were always gone. The work of keeping a 8' fence in repair the rabbits were coming into the garden and eating everthing about ready to pick. So finally would get a crop of corn and the raccons and birds cleaned up what grew. We gave up they won the spot.
This year 4 tomato plants. rain and cool weather cause stunted plants. Then quit raining and drought conditions. having to water every other day. temp., over 90 deg day and night so no new tomatos develped. We added up the cost and decided cheaper to get less tasty vegetables but we had them.
My father on this same garden said he planted so the rows faced the front porch. Using a shot gun got what ever was in the garden and also did some weeding.

I have lost the battle vs weeds this year. They are so thick I've been mowing between the rows. But, still to no avail. The only solution I think will be heavy mulch between rows and or roundup.

Due to the poor weather up our way (still waiting for summer) we only planted some of our raised beds. Just a couple of days ago out came the machete to hack down the larger weeds. Tried my gas weed eater with brush blade but the grass and weeds would just wrap around the blade/shaft area. It's a jungle out there.

...you have to use a weedeater on your garden weeds

Well.. I tried using my pieced together push mower on ours. But, the mower body I used doesn't have a side discharge and I didn't have a bagger for it. That lead to the grass clogging it up to where it died and it won't start now - most likely a sheared flywheel key (a project for later). Then I tried to weedeat a bit. A couple days later, what I weedeated had turned brown and I thought to myself.... I was going to get some hay/straw to put down as mulch. But this stuff I just weedeated looks close enough to hay/straw to me. After I spread what I had previously weedeated, I started grabbing fresh handfuls and pulling it, then throwing it back down. We'll see if this works or not. If it does, there's plenty more where that came from :)

Funny how the grass grows so much better in the garden than it does in the yard.

It has been so dry here that even the weeds have died. :(

You might be a Red Neck if you till your garden with a back hoe.
Never met anyone that ever did that. Well maybe one person that I refuse to name.:thumbsup:

I've mowed, brush hogged weedeat and rototilled our garden where weeds were just too much this year other projects have took 1st place yard is now 6" or higher. garden is over waste high few maters still going cucumbers died off, even the zuccinni are croaking... taters were getting close to done due to heat back in july so might be some under the weed patch... beads were in late but got 2 messes off then gave up picking too much work elsewhere.

I did get the barn floor concrete done last week now working on the rough framing for walls n stuff...
