I thought there would be some great stories on this thread .. I'm a little disappointed.
I've got quite a few stories, but one comes to mind.
I was told, that is if I cut the cat-tails, in the pond, below the water level, that would take care of them. So, I took the weed-whacker/brush cutter with the brush blade out in the boat to cut them off below the water level, thinking, the blade would have less drag. I stood up, and pulled the starter rope. I immediately fell in. The engine of the whacker was hanging from the edge of the boat. I waded out with wet wallet, etc..
There is one more, which has come to mind.
Had a decent size maple near the house, with most of the weight toward the house, which I wanted to saw down. Plus, it was right along side of the garage. I drove a stake in the ground, about 30 feet away and chained the tree to it with a come-a-long. As I sawed, I kept tightening the come-a-long. This would have worked fine, except as the tree started to fall, the chain no longer had any effect on it's trajectory. My hinge-cut was off by a couple of degrees, so a fair number of branches crashed down on the garage roof. No real damage, but I was embarrassed that my scheme didn't work better.
I had pretty much the same experience. I attached the tree to a 9K winch mounted on my truck. But once the tree bagan falling, the cable went slack, and didn't pull the tree quite the way I wanted. No real damage, but I now realize the winch cannot take up the slack that fast. I think hiring a guy with a bucket truck is my next scarey tree removal technique.
