You Know You Are Old When

These are the stories I heard.
The first property my parents had didn't come with a tractor.
He pulled the disc to work up the ground with his pickup.
He'd have to stop often to let it cool off.
It wasn't geared for that kind of work and would overheat pretty quick.
His first tractor was a John Deere on steel wheels.
You started it spinning the large flywheel on the side and switched to kerosine.
Once she started running good you turned her over to diesel.
Just a drawbar, with your a-s hanging out over the implement.
You better not fall off.
Now the modern tractors rival some of the crap out of NASA.

My Dad had a Ford Model A with the back half of the cab cut off and used it as a sweep rake for loose hay. My Grampa had

some kind of a old truck with out a cab that he used for something, I was too young at the time. A guy that lives a few miles

from me has an old Model A with out a cab that he runs around with and another Model A, which is his only car and uses it for

all his travels.

My first car IS 71 years old. A 1954 Willys CJ3B Jeep. It was 21 yo when I got it from my grandfather at age 15 in 1975.

I expect that you may have remembered or heard incorrectly.
The old dual fueled tractors started on "gas" then when warmed up would get switched to what was called distillate a light kerosene or heavy "gas"..

The first car I owned was a '56 plymouth 2 door sedan. It would be 68 years old now. The first new car i bought was a '63 Pontiac Tempest with the 326 V8.

My first car would be 65 years old.
My first car was a 1939 Cadillac Lasalle. Older than me, but it was dad's "fun" car before us kids came along, and put into long-term dry storage when we did.

My grandfather sold his first car to somebody who cut it down for a tractor, which was common practice 90 years ago. It made him sick, as he took good care of it.
He never sold another car.
Very common with Fords both with kits and on the fly..

I was given one and after sitting 40 years in a field got it running… it had a sickle bar mower and one Model A Transmission mounted directly behind another for gear reduction…

I know that I'm getting old. Saturday I was sawing lumber. Yesterday I was up and down a ladder in 10 degree weather. Completely unrelated but today my foot is swollen like a football and I am hopping around on one foot.
The last two times the Dr said gout but test results say no. This time I am going to find out what in the heck is going on. Not being able to walk is no fun.

My knees don't like ladders much anymore. I had a couple projects last summer where I was up & down a ladder all day...by supper time my knees were screaming at me.

For the last year I've been one legging stairs and ladders of any kind. The left knee won't take and load when bent so it just stays straight when I go up steps or ladders even the cab steps are one legged. Bone on bone per the x-ray or so the PA said. See the orthopedics again this week to see whats up and what they may want to do.

Yesterday, my wife and I went for our usual 2 mile walk. I stopped to step aside and take a piss. she kept on, but then waited for me to catch up. It was about 60 yards between us, just about at the 1 mile turn around. I stepped up my game and broke out in a run to rejoin her.

MISTAKE!
My legs and knees are barking like mad tonight, and I could hardly snow ski today on the mountain. And we were busy with so many calls and wrecks!

This getting old, is getting old!

I tried jogging one day at the end of a 3 mile walk. I had a 20mph wind at my back so I gave it a try. For about 30 yards.

I decided I'm a plow horse, not a race horse.

Mr. CalG's comment reminded me...

YKYO when you quit downhill skiing...

Not because you can no longer ski, but because the risk of injury increases with age and the impact of a broken bone would be major...over a very long time.

From the top of Copper mountain 2 years ago - and likely our last ski adventure...

I remember my last ski adventure vividly.
I always skied solitary even if at the hill with a group.
I just can't pace myself with the slowest person in the group.
The day starts slowly first thing in the morning.
By the afternoon you're a well oiled machine.
Used to love to tuch in and just whip down the main runs.
Only came in to get some liquids (water only) in and back out.
Never cared for the group meal wasting precious hill time.
My favorite part was the evening with the lights on and just leaning back swishing down the hill side.
The earlier day of moguls and black diamond runs over, just the relaxed flight.
You feel as one with the skis.
I used to go with bus trips.
Good memories of sitting back in the big seats, looking into the dark heading home taking a small swig of brandy.
You knew you'd be sore by the time you got home 4 hrs later and the next day but it was a good sore.

Burl Ives a Holly Jolly Christmas??
No mention of Gene Autry Rudoff the red nose raindeer??

Anyone remember the movie Ghost Riders in the Sky where Gabby Hays riding the wagon being pulled by a team of horses wagon crashed and that was the end of Gabby? Am I miss taken?? This was between 1945-9

I tell people that you can't do anything about growning old but you can eat right and poke fun at it! When I was 40 they told me I had spurs but I don't have a horse then when I was 80 they told me I had shingles and I don't do roofs either!

They've gotten very good at knee replacements.
I had one done 8 years ago. Really don't want to get one done this time of year needing to be able to get in the tractors and the worst kneeling down to shake the ashes down and pull the ash pan on the coal insert. May have to put it off a few months even if they are willing to with my other conditions, COPD, afib and a touch of Congestive heart disease.
