thanks slowrev and texbaylea

I kept my well plumbed in and can/will run off of it if the city water runs out and/or I need to water outside.

Actually I do have a well but it's not connected to the house. It's used to water the vegetable gardens and the sprinklers on a 4 acre yard. It also runs off 3-phase so you can't run it off a small generator during power outages. I'll have to look into a phase converter some time so that I can run it but I'm not sure how they work or even if it's worthwhile. Our power outages don't usually last that long.

Yes it will for a while, at least until the water tower is emptied. It depends on the difference in height between your house and the water tower. The problem was that we live on a little hill and the height difference wasn't that big. Since they didn't have an emergency generator on the well to keep the tank filled, as people used water the level in the tank dropped and we lost water pressure until after about 2 hours we got no water at all. I'm sure most people were just like us, as soon as the power went off they filled bathtubs, sinks and containers because they knew that the supply wouldn't last for long. There were lots and lots and lots of complaints and the co-op eventually moved their tower to higher ground .... a lot higher. I don't know if they installed a back-up generator but during the last 40 hour outage we didn't loose the water supply so that problem may be a thing of the past but as I said, it doesn't hurt to have a 55 gallonn barrel filled and ready just in case. I can still remember how it felt not being able to flush a toilet and having to drive around looking for some place that was open in order to buy water.

EastTexFrank,

Thanks for the info. We're pretty low from the water tower so I expected we'd have pressure for quite awhile (even if they didn't have a generator).
One thing I need to keep in mind. My septic system has a pump to get the liquid from the final (3rd) tank out to the mound. In my case, it may be best for me to shut off the city water if the power goes out and I don't have the generator connected. I'd hate for lots of water to be used and fill all the septic tanks beyond their capacity. (there's an actual plug in the 3rd tank to plug the pump in. I'd hate for it to get to that level...)

Your'e driving down the road [not 55 mph either since there are no police around] the person up ahead hits an animal of some sorts, THEN slams on the brakes, veers off the road, checks to see iffen it's fresh enough , throws it in the back of the pickup for dinner! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Candles!?!? How long would it take to cook venison on a candle? I don't get it.

Hey, here's another one: You know you live in the country when... you hear a vehicle driving by on the gravel road out front, and you actually make an effort to see it.

Your bio doesn't say where you are located but you could be in East Texas. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif The one thing I have been told is that, if it's a deer, make sure it is dead before you throw it into the back of your truck. If it's just stunned, it will kick the crud out of your bed as it comes around and never, ever throw one in the back seat of your car. I don't know if any of that is true, just some old guy advice I got in the coffee shop when I first started coming through to East Texas many years ago.

My Example,

You know you live in the country when you live in your barn.

You know you live in the country when you park you dozer in your driveway next to your pickup.

You know you've lived in the country TOO long when you start thinking how much better your dozer looks than your pickup.

The leaves land in your yard in the fall but instead of raking them you wait for a windy day and mother nature to take them away.
