When we moved to town we didn't keep the doors locked. That ended when someone walked in and took some things. They got the best nose hair scissors I ever owned. It's been nearly 30 years and I still miss them.

Bwahahaha! Funny.

About 2-3 years ago I was at work talking to a coworker about processing my chickens the next upcoming weekend. One of our other coworkers overheard and indignantly asked me why I just didn't go buy my chicken at the grocery store like everyone else. I just had to chuckle and leave that alone. Some folks are really disconnected from reality and others are not - regardless of city or country living... :)

They actually went bankrupt and were bought out by Bi-Lo.

I knew a lot of employees that lost their retirements that were in company stock.
Yes, I wondered if I had the latest info. That and I didn 't read far enough into the article .They 're still called Winne Dixie in my area and they are very large, well stocked stores.

My territory for work is the whole state. I constantly get directions "oh, it's easy to find. It's right behind Bob smith's farm, or some other persons place" :banghead:

I have to explain that I live 80 miles from there and have know bloody idea of who he's talking about  Give me the closest intersection so I can find it on a map, then north, east, south, or west :) Then if the farm has a sign out front, give me the name of the farm. ;)
Are you from the UK? "Bloody."

My BIL lives in "The Old Penhale place" on Penhale Road. My cousins in Vermont, the Threshers, live on Thresher Road, which is on Thresher Hill.

ON giving direction. I was dispatcher and training for newbies. One example I would use when taking directions was (caller) Got to Turner Corners and take a right at the next intersection. All the locals know where turner corners is...but. It was a small communitye with a country store on one of those notorious right angle corners where the road follows section lines. Fact is the community is no longer there and the road has been straightened, thus, no store, no corner. Hand those direction toa new deputy and he ain't a gonna find it.

I guess times are changing. Many years ago when I got my draft registration card, the official address of the local Selective Service office was "1 block south of Courthouse".

This thread has brought back many good memories.

We did not have an electric fence checker back in the early 1960's so the only way to verify if the fence was hot or if there was a short, was to touch it. My father taught me how to check it with the back side of the hand. He always said never touch it with the front of the hand so that there was no way that the muscles could contract and cause you to grab it. Just brush it with the back of the hand, never actually touch it firmly until you had first checked it.

The way to check an electric fence is with a blade of green grass about 6" long. Hold one end and put the other end on the wire, then slide your hand forward until you start to feel a tingle. If you get all the way to the wire, the fence is off. The grass is a field expedient variable resistor.

Deep in the comments on that article:

"These Numbers do NOT include MILITARY BASES.
add in military bases and Texas moves up to the 2nd highest welfare state.

"you should look at the links ( you have to go further than one link back) and you'd see what's counted and what is not.

"Military bases, social security, military pay and retirement are not counted."

It also doesn't count defense contractors, which pump $6 billion a year into the Texas economy. I laugh and laugh at the Texas secession movement. Pull the federal gravy train, and Texas would dry up and blow away.

I'm always running into the "food comes from the grocery store" survivalists. They have no clue about seasonal processing and how much food is sitting in warehouses. In the spring around here you can buy a pound of frozen vegetables for 69 cents because they have to clear out the freezing plant for the next year's crop. They have no idea how fast you can raise a batch of fryers, and if you put them in chicken tractors to protect them, they will half feed themselves.
