Your Advice Please Kubota vs JD

NO COMPARISON. The BX 1500 should be the tractor you buy. It is based on the bigger BX2230 and BX1800 series. Do not deiced on price , the $1500 extra for the Kubota is money well spent.

Well now thats a definite opinion that is causing me some thought. One of my concerns (aside from the 1,500) is the 15hp diesel in the Kubota vs the JD 20hp gas? Also, it seems as though the attachments were higher priced for the Kubota and he doesnt have the bar tires in stock to fit it? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The BX is 4wd, the others are not. If you look at frame thickness, and construction the differences will be evident.

As far as the engines.....The best analogy and actual experience I can give is this.:

I just replaced a brand new 25HP v-twin Kawasaki Zero turn commercial mower...($7000) with a BX23 series Kubota. The diesle engine has so much more power, do not get caught up in the lame horsepower claims on the gas tractors. They simply will not give you the same workable power, nor the same life. A diesel is constructed much more heavily and built for years of trouble free life. My Kubota with a 60 inch deck cuts better, smoother, quieter and does not bog down at all. There were times I stalled the 25 HP Kawasaki in the commercial zero turn mower.

Plus, you get the availability of a loader and other 3 point attachments. Do a search in the Kubota forum about the BX1500 you will find many happy owners.

Pick the potential dealer(s) first, regardles of color, then deal with which model and what features. Many new buyers concentrate on models and features because they are objective measures, e.g., weight, horsepower, etc. and avoid the subjective criteria. This is a mistake. You buy a tractor once (hopefully), you will interact with the dealer for years.

I think you've realized that you're not comparing apples to apples. The GX is a nice looking machine - have you looked at the diesel models in that model range? I can see the next step up in the Deere's (2210 and 4010) get expensive compared to the little BX. I didn't go into specs and all that (I'll leave that to you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) but based on the two models you've mentioned I think I'd go with the BX - down the road I think it will stand up better, and it does give you more options. If you read the board you'll find a load of BX owners, and they sure seem to like those tractors.

Hi...

I'm not familiar w/ these 2 tractors...

But...check the construction of the tractors... frames especially...

Relative of mine... prior Deere dealership owner for 35+ years... told me just this weekend...

The quality materials and construction of older Deere garden tractors like the famous and excellent 2xx & 3xx series... don't show up in the current Deere line until the 4xx and 5xx series... (like ~1/4 thick welded frames)

The current Deere 3xx series has less substantial material/construction(frame) than the older 3xx series...
(Thinner stamped vs. thicker welded)

I'll choose diesel over a gas engine any day... more torque... better longevity... much better fuel consumption... less maintenance...

Gas versus Diesel - Don't compare the HP.

As others have said, you can't compare the HP from gas to diesel. I have a Sears 25HP GT5000 garden tractor with a Kohler Pro V-Twin engine. I also just got a Kubota 7610, which is a 24HP 3-cylinder diesel. The Kubota has so much more USEABLE power that it's not even an apples to apples comparison.

I'm not sure TECHNICALLY how they compare the two kinds of engines, but they are very different in the amount of work that can be done.

That being said, I like having both. We use the GT5000 for lots of yard work where the Kubota is too big. We use the Kubota lots of places (like the front end loader) where the GT5000 could not do that job. It is nice to have both.

"The current Deere 3xx series has less substantial material/construction(frame) than the older 3xx series...

That's about like saying that the Kubota's have a poor drivetrain.

I purchased a new Kubota in December 2003 and have had no problems with the tractor or FEL. I did replace the R-4 tires with Ag tires due to poor traction. The HSD controls and stearing breaks on the Kubota are on the right side making it dificult to use both in tight areas. I have since operated a JD mowing grass at church and like the layout much better. The JD at church has the HSD on the right and the stearing breaks on the left.

The Kubota does have a lock for the HSD but you must realease the lock to back up.

The Kubota is a great tractor but I would buy the JD. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It sure is fun to spend others money. But I'm gonna raise both hands in favor of the BX or even move up to a BX 2200 or JD 2210. I'm not sure how far you can strech the budget but I don't think you'll regret it.

I don't think you will go wrong with a BX or JD but I liked the JD 2210 better, mostly minor things. Its so much more useful the just a riding mower. I have about 3 acres too and don't know what I'd do with out it. Best tool I ever bought and its even fun to cut the grass.
