I was given a free John Deere Van Brunt grain drill by a neighbor. The property it came from used to be working farm about 2 generations ago, but now no one works it other than another person who cuts hay off of their fields. The husband of the lady who will eventually inherit the property was cleaning out/repairing a barn and asked if I wanted the drill. It was in need of some repair but I wound up selling it for $250.

My best deal buying was a rusty A & B Eagleline pond scoop for $90. I cleaned it up and repainted it to look like new. Wound up trading it even for a Leinbach cultivator. I talked with A&B and they said that pond scoop retails for about $550 new.

Yep, freebies abound............. no doubt. Mine is a 9' fisher plow with cylinders that still worked without leaking and a very servicable cutting edge.

Perhaps a more evokative question might be: "What is the most productive, trouble free, joy to work with, implement you have ever acquired"........

How about a B7100 c/w FEL and 4ft bush hog for $2000? that's a hydro and it had seperate hydraulics for FEL.

Needed some TLC but otherwis OK, tires will be due soon but don't leak.

Picked up a 72" Erskine type pull behind blower for $50 today. $80 in gas, a bearing, pto adapter, and hardware later I had a fully operating blower at dinner time tonight.

IMO...if there is no exchange of articles of value ($ etc.) it is not a "deal" so free stuff don't count...

So I have two that (IMO) qualify...:

I paid $25 for a perfect, like new condition boom pole I found on Craigs List...replacement value $125-$150

I paid $300 for a (MF model 41) sickle bar mower that after replacing $50 worth of bearings, sleeves and bushings...its replacment value is now $850-$1000...

$50 for a 5' bush hog from Craigslist. I mowed a good size field for the owner of a local fab shop and he replaced the rusted out side skirts, lengthened the PTO shaft and made a chain guard for the back.

Gale got me thinking. I bought a 4' x 4' section of a spiked drag harrow for $1 off eBay. Took $40 worth of gas to go get it. Has sat on the scrap metal pile for 3 years without ever being used. Is that a good deal or not.
