I just installed 5w-30 for the winter use..... I don't know if it will be acceptable for summer use.... The more I read about oil, the less I know... I like the old days when it came in a cardboard can and you punched a hole in the metal top to pour. Before that, it was glass containers in a rack like milk bottles.... now everything is so confusing... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have used Syntec 5W50 for years in my '01 car, '98 SUV, '76 tractor, '85 lawn tractor, lawn mower, '85, '85, '86, & '91 ATVs, and '03 Chipper! The high temperatures in air cooled engines love synthetic oil! I have never experienced any engine problems (blue smoke, nasty noises, high consumption, over heating, etc)!! I use synthetic for it's high performance and quality - I do not extend oil drain intervals.

Looks like I'm going to start using Amsoil Series 2000 Synthetic 20W-50 Racing Oil (www.amsoil.com/products/tro.html) in everything because of it's even better qualities!! It costs a little more, but so what - "Oil is cheaper than repairs!"

Attachment compares Amsoil wear test against Mobil-1.

alot of diesels can use 30w in summer now most truck engines are specing out 30w for fuel economy in europe now. Cummins indicated 15w40 gets better fuel economy in high load vs 5w30 0w30 10w30

Can you use Mobil 1 in the Kubota diesel engine, or do you use Delvac instead? Also, what do yall think about putting Mobil 1 in the Kawasaki 10HP industrial engine on my Mule 550?

Alan,
Does the transmission use the engine oil for lubricant like an ATV or motorcycle? If so, you would probably be better off to use the motorcycle grade Mobil 1. Wal-Mart doesn't carry it but Autozone does. If not the standard product should be fine. As others have stated, air cooled engines (due to the potential for higher operating temperatures) can actually make better use of a synthetic oils resistance to breakdown due to extreme heat than a water cooled engine would.

It does have a Diesel rating on it but it would probably be better to use Delvac since the additive package is designed with diesel in mind.

I am a recent convert to Mobil 1. I use it in all my gas engines since it is so cheap to use in the small engines (1 or 2 qts max) and I extend the oil changes on my truck (to 15k from 5k). Since I drive 30k miles a year that makes a big diff for me... don't have to change the oil when there is a foot of snow on the ground.

I don't know if the Mule transmission gets it lubrication from the engine oil or not. Guess I should look at the manual. It is an air-cooled engine however.
