In most fonts, zeros are a bit narrower than ohs; 0 vs O. When handwritten in a place where there may be any question as to whether it's a digit or a letter I always put a diagonal slash through the zero.
That makes sense. I wondered about the attempt to make a zero look like an eight.
Now if we can figure out why some like to cross the seven making it look like a dyslexic F.
