We are looking at buying a ZD21 zero turn radius mower. Has anyone had any problems with one? How smooth and comfortable are they to mow with? In general, what do you think of them?

The ZD21 is a very smooth riding mower, given the fact the mid mount zero turn mower have such a short wheel base which equates into a rougher ride. The ZD21 has a suspension with arm rests and is adjustable to different weight settings. Most other mowers only have compression springs under the seat and give a limited amount of cushion.
We sold several ZD's last year and encounered only one problem. most of the units sold were used in commercial applications, some of the units ran more than 300 hrs.

The early units had a minor fix but I can't tell you what it was. I do not own one but have looked at different ZTR mowers with a friend who is on the verge of buying. I like the fact that the mower deck is direct shaft drive and that their are no pulley driven pumps to drive the motors at the wheels like most ZTR's. Everything is compact and simple. They do not look home made, and yes it is a Kubota. A 28hp 72" model will be available in April and all current mowers have a ROPS as standard. Their is no setup or assembly of the current mowers. The dealer drives them off the truck.

It's true the ZD's require a limited amount of setup, but they are shipped to dealers in a crate, we can't just drive one off the truck.

I was at the Central Ohio Power Show and spoke with my dealer with whom I purchased my 3010. A friend and I went there hoping to see the 72" model but saw the new BX22. My dealer told us that they had unloaded several new 60" ZTR's that day and that they had trouble getting in the trailer to offload the ZTR's with the ROP's.. Kubota has a distribution point at Rickenbacker Air Base and that could be the reason or I mistood my dealer. The way I understood him they literally drove them off of the truck.

I'm not sure what "fix" your referring to, but I have a 2001 model and all I've had done is the e-brake mod. (recall) Nothing that will keep you from cutting grass, but it's suppose to be easier to use. (foot brake instead of hand)
Not sure why they think it's any easier, because if you mash the foot brake, the engine kills. OK if your falling down a hill, but not very user friendly if your trying to ease it down the gate of your trailer.

BTW- I love this mower. I love the diesel engine. I wish I could cut in reverse just to smell the fumes. I have no regrets. I smile everytime I pass it in the shop, not to mention everytime I need to use it. If it was anymore comfortable, I'd fall asleep mowing the yard. Check your tire pressure, adjust the seat preload, lean back in the cumfy high-back chair, and mow away. Cutting the lawn will become the most restful part of your day.
