I'm thinking about a zero turn mower (for the last umteen years). We have about an acre with lots of trees and shrub in front. The back is rough not a smooth lawn at at because of moles and probably lack of grass care for the past 25 years. The idea of an electric mower intrigues me. Does anyone have practical experience with one? Ego ( @lowes) and Ryobi (@home depot) seem to be the most readily available here. Comments about real experience with those makes would be useful.
Otherwise I'd probably get a John Deere or Toro gas zero turn.
Thx.

In my experience if you are thinking any lawn equipment that is Battery power, EGO is by far the best.
I have an EGO string trimmer and leaf blower and love them,
I've used the 42" zero turn and its very nice, I have not pulled the trigger on it yet.
One nice thing is the batteries work in all EGO equipment, so buying into the systems works well.
(admittedly the 10.0ah batteries from the ZTR are a little hefty for a trimmer or blower but they work in a pinch....)
5 year warranty on the mower, batteries and charger, so I think its a safe bet. (they have service centers all across the US if you need something repaired, just check the website to see how far you would need to travel if an issue arises)

Battery is not for everyone but for folks with an acre or 2, I think its a good fit.

It's hard to justify paying extra for a battery powered ZTR when the same size gas ZTR can be had for $1,000 less and won't need battery packs to be replaced in the future.

As much as I like the idea and would really like to buy an electric, the idea of no local servicing and problems I've read about customer service I'll probably go with a gas powered one. Just can['t seem to pull the trigger on an EGO. I have a JD now. It's between another JD or Toro, more than likely. (42" has to fit into a 60" door)

We too have a number of EGO handheld pieces. We like our stuff. I have 2 customers that speak highly of the ZTRs. Both less than a year in. People like their walk behinds just fine. I would personally let the market get more experience with them due to the serviceability though. If you communicate w/ EGO about how they handle service and warranty problems on these, let us know.

It depends on what you are looking for in electrics:

For the average "suburban" lawn the Ego or Ryobi would be fine. Stihl and others also have them but most are built by someone else them branded for them. Size-wise it sounds like you would be in this range, but depending on the roughness of your back yard you may want to move up to commercial-grade.

If you want to get into commercial reliability, longer runtimes (and of course higher price!) you should look at GreenWorks, Mean Green, Toro, or Exmark.

My neighbor just bought an EGO 52" zero turn a few weeks ago. He has about an acre. It mows the acre and he said he has about 70% battery left when done. It appears to have a very nice cut. He said it's a lot faster than his old riding mower, and a lot more comfortable. It is definitely a lot quieter. It has 6 batteries. 5 year warranty on everything, including batteries and charger. Supposed to charge from 0 to full in 4 hours.

He said he's kinda embarrassed about the price. After all's said and done, around $7K. But he got $770 back in the form of Menard's 11% merchandise rebate program. So $6300 plus gifts and prizes.

So, with that said... no oil changes. No hauling gas cans. No winterization. Hopefully, no dead starting battery! 🙃

5 year warranty. At year six or maybe 7, batteries will be at 25 to 30% charge max. At least one will have died. And parts? Nonexistent. Just like all other 5 or 6 year old battery powered tools. So just say $1k per year depreciation. My new Ferris was $6500, and mows 4 acres on a quarter tank of gas, roughly 2 gallons.
