Zero Turn for 4 acres?

I agree with all that said to spray around the trees. We're white trash and I have sprayed around the house also. My weedeater time is very minimal. Spend the money on a commercial mower with a roll bar. It'll be money well spent. Spray around the trees and along the driveway. I'd much rather have something to show for my money sitting in the garage than hiring it out. If your dead set on a chevy. Atleast get a high country. Nothing wrong with a rolls and when it's almost enjoyable to mow it's much less or a chore

My opinion.
For what you are paying per year to have someone else mow it. You could pay for a good commercial zero turn in a 1 1/2 years that would last for many years and mow 4 acres in an hour or so.
I mow 8 acres with many dozen trees in around 2 hours with my Hustler Super Z 72" deck (the thing will mow at 14 MPH) , and it should last me decades.

I don't think Chevy vs Bentley is a far comparison. This is more like backhoe vs shovel.

A zero turn will significantly cut your mowing time. I went from 5 hours for 5 acres with a 46" lawn tractor to 2 hours 30 minutes with a 54" zero turn. I went with a Hustler Raptor SD and love it. You spend $600 a month on a lawn service. In 4 years that is $16,000 (assuming 9 month mowing season). You could buy any zero turn for far less than this, and any good machine will last a lot longer than 4 years with the low hours you will be putting on it. I narrowed my choices to Hustler and Scag, went with the Hustler and love it. Wish I had bought it 8 years ago when I bought my 46" lawn tractor instead. Lots of good zero turns out there, especially in the $4-7K range.

Great replies! I'm still on the fence about having a service maintain the grounds, or do it myself. Leaning towards buying a decent zero-turn though. I have no problem buying toys, I mean tools. I have two lifts in my garage / shop for playing around with cars. Heck, I bought a Case dozer, just to play around with it for a while.

So the questions are - Do you mind cutting grass and tending to landscape? Do you need an additional form of exercise?

There will come a time when the equipment purchased will outweigh the on-going and probably increased costs of a gardening service.

My uncle has a similar sized yard. He mows with an 8N Ford and a 5' Bush hog that he set up to mow low. IIRC, he dropped the blades an inch or so in order not to have the runners drag the ground when mowing low, and the tailwheel is adjusted to keep the deck level. You can't tell what's been mowed with the tractor and what was trimmed with the push mower from the road. A modern tractor with finishing mower or tractor/hog would get it done fast and the large tires and cushy seats would make it a very comfortable ride.

You may want to look into Husqvarna. They have package deals that if you buy a mower and other handhelds you can get great discounts. Also they have some 52" or 61" models that aren't anywhere near the 10k mark.

That's both ridiculous and cool but a 60 inch zero turn is probably almost as fast and the more stuff you have to mow around the faster the smaller deck with more agility becomes. I wouldn't want to back that beast up either.

I've wanted to build something like that just for the cool factor. After I released how impractical it would be for my use the plans got scrapped.

I would get a 60" commercial mower with stick controls (eXmark, Bad Boy, Scag, etc, ask the local mowing outfits that run 3-4 mowers on a trailer who has a good dealer in the area) or one of the out front mowers (be it a Woods, Deere, Kubota, Toro, etc) and have at it.

Did we establish how hilly or uneven the ground is... or tight spaces? For me I have to be very careful about scalping certain areas due to my terrain even with a 42in deck!

Scalp it enough times and you will redistribute the dirt so that it is no longer in the high spot
