With box store prices pushing $5000 vs $6000 or so for used low hour compact diesel tractors, I would even consider that option over paying so much at a box store.
where are you finding low hour compact diesel tractors for $6k, I would love to get a few dozen of those. No seriously if you have access to that kind of a deal i want in.With box store prices pushing $5000 vs $6000 or so for used low hour compact diesel tractors, I would even consider that option over paying so much at a box store.
that would be a sub-compact not a compact, but see where you are going.
Lowest I see is $6950 for a JD 2210 with 632 hours with a mid mount mower. There was a similar one for sale here in middle TN that already sold.
having used a lawn tractor sub-compact and a zero turn, just for cutting the grass IMO it is Zero turn any day all day long. Sub-compacts have there place but if you can afford to go with a dedicated grass cutter, zero turn for the win unless you have to cut ditches with mud in them, but the Sub-compact is a PITA there also just not as much of a PITA.

Ariens Zoom 54XL, bought from Home Depot six years ago. About 175 hours on it. Has ZT3100 transmissions, Kohler 26hp motor, and a welded deck. Overall, the machine has been solid. No question, you give up service with the big box purchase. I happened to have about $500 worth of Home Depot gift cards at the time, so that made a fair dent in the $3000 purchase price. If I had been buying without the gift cards, I would have probably gone with a model from the local Snapper dealer.
If you buy from a big box store, try to find one with a Kawasaki motor, upgraded transmissions (ZT2800 or ZT3100), and a welded deck. Those are the big ticket durability items on these machines.
