Why is the name Zert used in America when talking about the good old fashioned grease nipple ?

Zerk fitting.

The patent for the Zerk fitting was granted to Oscar U. Zerk in January 1929, and the assignee was the Alemite Manufacturing Corporation[1] (thus the eponymous names for the fittings). Today many companies make these grease fittings.

Thank you for the info , until I read it on here I had never heard a grease nipple referred to as a Zert

The patent drawings were a different shape. I didn't read the patent, but it may be for the ball, acting as a one-way valve.

Zerts, I can't help but laugh.

Reminds of a project I worked on in college where we did a pretend set of highway plans. One of the other kids in my class did some of the drafting and we put some rip rap in the ditches, you know, the big rocks that stop erosion. The problem is he thought it was spelled RIF RAF. I had this picture of several people, all white trash, sitting in the ditches along the road.
