Zoysia Grass

Has anybody every heard of or actually used this stuff? My wife found an ad in a magazine for it. It sounds interesting except that I would lose tractor set time /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif But the price sounds decent. Anybody ever tried it? Does it work? They claim slow growth, lush green lawn, and it'll choke out weeds and other stuff. If that truly is the case how do you stop it? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I know, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But I've been amazed by "science" before. We are considering ordering some. We wouldn't order a whole lot just to see what it would do. If it doesn't work we won't be out that much. Maybe $30 - $40.

I have no personal experience with it but I must admit, that like you, I've thought about trying it out in our present place.

I had a friend in Dallas who tried it out in part of his yard about 10 years ago so I don't know how relevent the information will be. He was "fairly" pleased with it although he said, and I can testify to it, that it was very slow to spread and he said he watered and fertilized it as "usual". Some of the newer varieties may be quicker.

Oh, and he did say that it was a booger, his words, to cut cleanly. If the blades weren't really sharp, it looked a bit "raggety".

I don't know if this will help because, as I said, it's old, second hand information. If you try it this year, give us an update. I, for one, would be interested.

I've got a patch of Zoysia grass in the back yard, about twelve years ago, it was about a foot sqrare, now it covers about 250 sq. feet. I have taken plugs out of it and placed elsewhere in the yard and it just fills back in where I remove it, I just fill in the bare space with dirt. I'm slowly getting it started in small patches all over the yard. In the summer, it is green and soft, really thick and nice to walk on, like a deep carpet, the grandkids call it carpet grass. Now the part I'm not sure I will like about it, in the winter when it goes dormant, it looks like dead grass, it's still solid and holds up well even when I drive over it when the rest of the yard is muddy, the only downside I can tell right now is the color in the winter. Attached is a pic of the color that it is now.

A co-worker of mine said he put some in this last summer, here in Northern Michigan. I was also thinking about it myself. His only comments to me was that it took a while to put in the plugs. He said they are put in at 1 foot spacing in little sqares. Hopefully this spring or summer I can find out how it worked out.

I can say down here in SC it does everything as advertised.
My only concern is it is the first thing to go dorment in fall and nearly the last to green up in spring. And I have no idea how to stop it.

A co-worker has Zoysia grass on parts of his lawn and he hates it. However, he only hates it because it won't mulch like St Augistine or Bahia. He says the Zoysia never mulches after he puts in in the pile. I've been doing a bunch of research on what I want to plant for grass, and I've been using University of Florida's agriculture website. It has lots of good info, but most of the info is directed toward Florida climates. Still a good read though.

Thanks everyone for the info. At least it seems to do what they claim. Maybe we'll buy some of it and put it in a section of the yard that I didn't originally seed that still looks like crap. Worst that can happen is it doesn't grow and still looks like crap. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Best that can happen is we really like it and it takes over the whole yard. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I'll let my wife know what you guys said. I'll keep everyone posted as to how it turns out if we do it.
