Zoysia Grass

I'm curious as to why it is banned in the Pacific NW? Is it going to take over the yard? Anyone know why it would be banned up here?

Answered my own question from their web site:

"Where do you ship?

We ship Amazoy plugs throughout the continental United States with the exception of Washington and Oregon. Our experience shows that weather conditions there generally are not conducive to the successful growth of zoysia. Unfortunately, we are unable to ship our product outside the continental United States (we cannot ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or Canada)."

I guess it isn't banned - it just doesn't grow here.

My entire yard is in Zoysia. I planted an area with spriggs from another area in rows 6" apart. It covered in 1 year but it took 2 years to get tall enough to need cutting. I would use a bermuda if I had to do it again. There is a spray you can get to keep bermuda out of flower gardens, but not zoysia. Penington has seed available now.

I put out a pallet of Emerald Z last year. http://mataturf.com/grass_info/emerald.htm Solid sod.

Pretty expencive comared to others. The place I ordered it from said to use a REEL type mower and bag the clippings. A rotory mowerer will tear not cut. Thatch is a problem. We have mild winters. Or low this year has been the upper 20s. It stayed there for a short time. The lawn is very patchy over the winter. It is covered with green patches that look like 'L's were the new grass grew between the squares. The rest looks dead.

It is very soft and thick. It like walking on thick foam pad. It grows very slow but very thick.

When I was living at my parents house in the early 70's, my dad planted zoysia grass in our yard. We were the only house in the neighborhood who had it. It was nice and thick (a bite to mow) but turned brown in the early fall and stayed that way until mid spring. Now every yard in that neighborhood has zoysia grass. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif And, no, nobody else planted it.

I have spent a great amount of time in Turf Management. Zoysia is a great warm season grass. Which part of Ohio are you in? Northern Ohio would surely be cool season grass. Southern could be the transition zone from cool season to warm season. Zoysia will be the last to come out of dormancy in the spring and the first to go dormant in the fall. It spreads rapidly and in good blue grass lawns it is a plague. Zoysia will never have the fine look of good blue grass, but it will take draught better and take the heat better. If you are looking for a great low maintenance turf, look at Legacy Buffalo grass. It has a great color, comes out of dormancy about the same as zoysia, requires no water or fertilizer. This is a great time to be involved in turf. We are seeing real strides forward in low maintenance grass. Look at the information at www.toddvalleyfarms.com or www.turfseed.com Both sites give great information.

I planted Zoysia about 6 years ago here in Northern Ohio. Major Mistake! Goes dead brown in early fall and looks awful until mid spring.

I went to a local sod farm that sold the El Toro variety of zoysia grass I was able to pick-up scrap pieces of sod for $50 a truck load. I plugged my yard with it a few years ago and it has spread rapidly. It tolerates shade better than bermuda grass and greens up quicker in the spring. I over seed it in the winter with winter rye grass to keep it looking somewhat green. It has a wide blade that almost resembles fescue but it is much more drought and heat tolerant than fescue.

It makes a great yard once you can get it to take. I have 500 sq. ft. of it in my yard, but I have 3 acres. My neighbor has it in most of his yard. It turns yellow earlier in the fall, stays yellow later in the spring. If the whole 3 acres was zoysia, it would look better. It stands out because the fescue is starting to green up already. I was going to till mine up. Anyone want the plugs?
