I agree with others that there is no perfect truck but the late model 5.9L Cummins is hands down the best engine to date in a diesel truck. The problem is its in a Dodge. It just seems they can not get the rest right like Ford and GM. Yes, Ford has its weak spots also like the the front end stuff and the GM Chassis was really lacking for many years.
I know all this stuff is changing and the last few years of all 3 have addressed many of the issues, especially GM with the Chassis and Dodge with the tranny. Only time will tell.
As for the 6.0 being a POS I could not disagree more. I have 2 and both are at nearly 100,000 miles with zero issues except for a faulty fuel gauge on my 06 F-350. Not a wrench put on either truck. Maybe I am lucky but I have nearly a dozen friends with them and the most major issue has been a EGR valve on a early one. I can not say the same for the 3 guys I know with Dodges and the 2 plus the one I had that had the Duramax. The GM has had by far the most engine and driveline related issues out of my group of friends and associates. The Dodge issues have not be engine related but tranny and other components for the truck that were just not up to the task but the Cummins has been bullet proof.
I would go out and buy a Cummins today if I could get it in another package. Now maybe I will be convinced that Dodge can make a truck that will fit me and hold up to how I use them but after my 03 2500 it will be a hard sell. I have not written them off like I have GM but it will take a lot to draw me away from Ford for HD diesel trucks. 3 down and zero mechanical issues have made me a believer. I would still have my 99 7.3 F-350 4x4 if it was not for that deer.
