I simply deleted individually the 5 I had.... they didn't show the usual check box to check and delete... I had to open each and delete individually.

anyway... not a problem for me anymore at this instant...glad I only had 5

I've never deleted any of the PMs, so it shows I have 3,612; 1,768 in the inbox and 1,844 sent. So how it came up with 975 Unread is a puzzle to me.

This issue dates back to when we converted our forum to vbulletin. When that was done, apparently a bunch of the PM read statuses were lost. I am not sure why it has happened again or if we will run into this problem on future upgrades.

I am going to look into this more in hopes of finding a solution.

Bird,

I was also unable to "Mark as Read".

MarkV

Mark,

Were the unread messages on the first page of your inbox? If not, you will need to go to the page in your inbox where the unread messages appear in order to select them and mark them as read.

I just tested the mark all read function and it is working properly.

Ok, I think I have the answer.

Part of our software upgrade changed the way the "mark as read" function works. Previously, in order for the forum to know which messages were read and which were unread, a cookie was used to remember the data.

However, the new version handles this differently by tracking the read status in the database. This is more accurate, but for our forum the catch is the old PMs that were sent or received prior to our migration to vbulletin.

Since some members have hundreds and hundreds of PMs in their inbox and marking them read 50 at a time is rather time-consuming, I have gone ahead and temporarily set the PM inbox to display 500 messages at a time. This way, you can select 500 messages at a time and mark them as read.

In a few days I will change the default messages per page setting back to 50 so the inbox will load faster.

Hey, even us computer dummies catch on eventually. I discovered that the 975 Unread were the oldest ones; i.e., pages 16 to 36, so I just now finished marking them all read 50 at a time.:D

Just a note...
When I go to a forum and go to Forum Tools and select Mark This Forum Read, the screen does not refresh and nothing is marked as read. However, if I leave that forum and return to it, everything is marked as read.

I'm using FireFox.

Same here.. I had a slug of messages show up unread.. anfter marking them all unread.. they still showed up.. I finally had to delete everything in my inbox and sent folder, and then hit the empty folder before they finally all disappeared.

on the flip side.. i see we have a multi quote feature now..

Yeah... technically, that is how the forum is suppose to work. When all threads have been viewed, then (and only then) the forum will be marked read.

However, we don't like how this works... so in our previous version of vbulletin, we modified the system to mark the forum read when you view it, regardless of how many threads are left unread.

The problem is I can't remember exactly how we did it, and I have to sort through a bunch of files and compare code to figure out what needs to be copied.

So until I get that done, you can either mark individual forums read or use the mark all read link in the navbar.
