Advice on Tractors for a City Girl

/ Advice on Tractors for a City Girl #41
I bought the MF 150 with the mower and a two year old 6' Dragon Box Blade that looked almost brand new and he will deliver it to Harrisonville from Warrensburg for $4800. I tried to get him to throw in the blade and delivery but it wasn't happening and he had another guy who was going to put a deposit on it so I didn't want to miss it. No smoke, fired right up, I mowed with it and it had a LOT of power in high 2nd gear. Fast as I wanted to go being a newbie. Went straight up a steep hill no problem. Good tires. Everything seemed to work but how would I know??The seller was very nice and I believe he sold me exactly what he said, a very well kept servicable Massey Ferguson. I could tell that it was original paint. The back spot light and orange light didn't work but the front four lights worked. He bought it from the orignal owner when that owner retired. My seller is in new house construction and only used it for mowing and landscaping. He said he knows it could do a lot more but he really didn't use the Multi gear at all. It looks to be under-utilized as it probably will be with me. It has a new battery from last year. I'M VERY EXCITED-HE DELIVERS IT TOMORROW! I'll post more pictures of anything you want to see. I also would like to get a manual on it so I can learn how to run it properly. FWJ you said that you could help me with all of the questions, where would I get a manual? Also, where would I found out about basic maintenance so it keeps running well?
THANKS A LOT!!

Congrats on your new addition. You did good.
Massey Ferguson's are fun machines. Enjoy.

Jensales has manuals for your 150.

Best Tractor Manuals In The World! - Jensales

I got the service manual for my MF-135 diesel from them. That manual covers the 150 also. Got the parts manual from them also.

I&T Shop Service has a shop manual (MF-27) that covers the MF135, 150 and 165. You can get these at amazon.com, motorbooks.com and elsewhere. These I&T manuals have a shaky reputation among some TBNers for being incomplete, misleading, and sometimes wrong.

congrats on the tractor! i must say that you should consider yourself lucky as those tractors in that kind of shape are very rare to find arounc my area! i'm sure FWJ can find you manuals and everything you will need for your new MF but if there's something he can't put his finger on send me a PM. guy i know sells Ford and MF parts, manuals, used implements that he restores himself, even has tractors for sale that he gets in and fixes up every now and then. if you want to look up his website, google it and type in Helms Farm Machinery. he is an awesome guy to do business with, i will put my garauntee on it! between FWJ and the guy i mentioned, if they can't find it, then it cant be found.

Nice buy -- you will find that every hour on your tractor makes 4 hours in the boardroom seem easy. LOL

Caution!!!! MultiPower will freewheel in low range. DON'T take off down a hill with it in low range. High MP is direct drive, Low is an "underdrive" if you will.

I saw my life flash once on my BIL's MF 1080(a big tractor). Simple little non readable lever on the dash, one way it freewheels, the other engine braking. And then my trip down the branch hill. And basically no brakes. STANDING on the brakes and a little driving on my part I made the bridge at speed. I'm not sure the purpose of that "feature". But you could be easing down a 1% grade hill without engine braking and feel that tractor picking up speed.

Nice looking tractor and a good deal!

Same thing with my MF-135 diesel.
It has Multi-Power. MP has to be in "High" for engine braking.

Tractors with MP can't be started by pushing or towing.

MP-equipped tractors have a "hill-holding" feature. When pulling uphill in MP high, depress the clutch through the first stage and the hill holder will prevent the tractor from rolling backwards. Hill holding works in forward and reverse gears, but only with the engine running.

It is also one way to see if the MP works or not, correct?.................and that was the beginning of the powershift era for MF.

How many horses? What kind of stabling? You might be facing a lot of clean up and a FEL (front end loader) is great for moving and piling "stuff."

No commission, but I'd be in the truck and on my way to get that tractor if it was closer to home! I've owned all sorts of tractors. Even have a few new ones. BUt given the choice, I'd be able to live with just one. The 150 is well balanced, economic to operate, reliable, simple design that's a breeze to take care of, and pound for pound/dollar for dollar, the best tractor I've ever had the pleasure of operating.

Farmwithjunk... how far is Leitchfield, KY from you? There's a 150 massey diesel tractor ForSale in Leitchfield, Kentucky for $4495 on craigslist.

This time yesterday I was IN Leitchfield (and White Mills) at a family reunion. It's about 65 miles down the Western Kentucky Parkway from here.

But about that tractor....

I saw the Craigslist add. I also saw the VERY SAME tractor listed for sale with location tractor can be seen listed as Lexington, Louisville, Bowling Green and then Lietchfield. I'd rather believe the person who liste it made a mistake. That's a decent buy. The 150 is a little rough around the edges, but otherwise all there. I'm just a little sceptical about the add.

I haven't posted for a while because I've been having too much fun mowing. I need a tractor bar and I failed to measure the little holes when I was out there last tme and this guy on Craig's list has two tractor bars for sale for $25. Does anyone know what size bar I need for my Massey Ferguson 150? Also, please tell me if I should keep the multi gear shifter in high all the time. You were talking about free wheeling and I don't know what that means. Thanks again for all your help I really love the tractor. I bought two 5 gallon tanks of gas and tried to fill her up and that didn't even touch it. How many gallons does it hold? Thanks for all your help!
