I just broke down in the pasture on my 7610s.. turned out the plastic? fuel strainer setting on top of the fuel tap melted and along with pieces of it and some sediment..was enough to starve off fuel. Now.. i replaced that fuel tap in 2004 due to a cruddy gunked up fuel strainer// I cleane dthe tank. so it's only been 4 ys.. tank was still really clean.. sediment was -very- minor.. most of the gunk was the melted fuel strainer.

all i've put in the tank was road diesel and the reccomended amount of white power service every fillup.. ( been using power service since i got the tractor , plus in my other diesels.. so i don't think it is the PS.. unless the new fuel strainers are sensitive to it. )

Luckilly the crescent wrench, straight screwdrive, shop rag, hammer and gas pliers I had in the tool box were enough to 'emergency' fix it while only loosing a cup or so of diesel..

any comments?

Are you sure it was the fuel strainer, and not that "non splitting" fuel cup, that finally decided to die? ;)

I've heard that some of the biodiesel mixtures are causing fuel filters to disolve on a limited basis. From what I've read, there is a wide variation/combination of additives that are added to the new ULSD and biodiesel.

Naw.. was the strainer for sure.. it's finger size and it melted / disolved and fell into the tap at the needle valve area and blocked it off.

No bio diesel... just road clear diesel and power service white bottle.. at reccomended dosages.

Well.. 2 in 4 years now.. I'm not amused... It's by no means a difficult repair.. it's just annoying... And it's not the 25$ part cost that bothers me.. it's having to kneel in my field with diesel running down my arm with my finger shoved up into the tank while blowing out my fuel tap, and then getting it back installed .. all the time trying not to loose any more diesel than I can help. All this with that heavy tool box mounting flange in the way, and only a few small hand tools to do the job when the part decideds to 'melt' away from home due to 'normal' use....

CNH really-really needs to take a look at this... if the plastic strainers are melting.. they need to move to a new formulation that is solvent resistant.. or perhaps metal screening.. etc.

About a year ago the ULSD was made mandatory (or at least a certain amount, I think 80%, had to be ULSD). Maybe that took this long, or the chemistry isn't as well thought out as one would hope.

Ok.. here's an update. I've been working onthe 7610s all morning.. took everything off from the tank up to the injector pump. every oring was mushy or eaton up, except the new nitrile orings I put in 4ys ago right at the tank tap..

I could not use the new CNH tap.. the thing would not thread into the tank past 1 thread... so I rebuilt the old tap using the needle and strainer from the new tap.. slapped it all back together and just filled it with 6g of diesel, bled it and started it . cleaned all the joints off with naptha and will see if I see any fuel leaks before filling her all the way up.

I guess this new diesel is garbage...

I gotta say, that sounds just like what you can get with biodiesel.
