I've a 25 year old diesel and don't use any additive. No leaks; no drips; no errors.

Try living in below freezing temps, and by "below freezing" I mean below 0*F and not just 32*F.

The better heating oil suppliers make a big deal out of fuel treatment "additives" during the winter. Plus, when I lived in the midwest, we certainly had issues with diesel during the winter- get a batch of "summer blend" from a gas station that didn't sell enough to switch over in the fall, and you'd never want to do that again. Gelled fuel is real.

I agree. Two years ago, when MA swithced to ULSD my supplier's other customers and I got "gelled" and . Jay

I don't think summer blend will be a problem in winter as long as you don't try to use it at temperatures
below 14 degrees.

Tell that to the people in MD and PA that had ULSD fuel gelling in the upper 20's. Some lab testing I have seen showed that once the gel formations appeared they had to be heated up to the lower 50's to get them liquefied again.

Here's a picture of a filter that gelled in the upper 20's. Wouldn't it have been easier to just use a additive to prevent this in the first place?

I have 32 oz of an additive in each 55 gallons of fuel.
That should handle it down to 14 degrees don't ya think?
