I've been completing a paver patio project...a little over 300 square feet in an irregular pattern.

This has involved:
---Removal (hardpan clay and roots...very tough) and transport (stockpile ~300 feet away) of roughly 3CY of dirt
---Unloading and placement of 20,000# of base stone
---Unloading and placement of 2,500# of washed sand
---Work area transport of paver stones (had 3,400# pallets of brick delivered)

When transporting the stones, I loaded them into the FEL bucket in batches of 110. A "band" of my particular paver is 90 stones weighting 535# in ideal conditions. So 110 of them is 653# not including moisture and sand between the bricks. I had no trouble raising or carrying said load. Given that the FEL is rated for 460#, I'll consider this pretty impressive.

During construction, the BX also afforded me efficient removal of all construction waste (cut bricks, especially...threw them directly into FEL and dumped directly into trash bins...never touched it otherwise).

TOTAL, I'm about 35 hours into the project (2-10 hour days, 2-5 hour days, and 2 evenings). ALL ALONE. Not a soul has carried a single brick or a single grain of soil except me and my BX. Given that the low-side estimate for this project is $20/sf or over $6,000, I'll consider it another big chunk out of my tractor's purchase price since I'm completing the project for under $2,000 including purchase of necessary specialized tools ($1,200 of which were the pavers themselves).

Ownership of my trailer saved me ~$320 in delivery fees for the stone and sand.

I have yet to perform final tamp into sand bedding, setting polymeric sand, washing the stones, or finishing the perimeter. I'll provide pictures of the finished product in about a week.

Yes indeed, every use is a savings!

I've got about 20 hours on my new BX2660, at least half of that is working on filling in my old pool. Every time I work on the pool I'm saving money! It won't take long to justify the purchase.

I love my BX.

There are many projects out there for which only a machine the size and strength of a BX will do, and without which, would be a lot of extra work and expense.

Sure beats a wheel barrow and shovel...:D

With 1130 hours on my BX23 at 45 dollars an hour comes to $50850 my BX23 has saved me.
That little tractor has paid for itself over 3 times.

It's no longer clean, and my first flat has been fixed. It is a wonderful tool.

I'll have to admit it. I only have 1/2 an acre up on a mountain. But my driveway is pretty long and steep. After I found out how much it would cost to pave it I decided to buy a tractor to maintain it. A BX24. It's at the dealer today getting a new fender. However I know what you mean. I've saved my back, lots of time, and had fun doin' stuff I woulda never done without it. Although the BX series is quite small for something with a loader or hoe it is amazing to see what they can do. Ya know, Kubota in Japanese really mean Little Bull. Guess that's why there named that.

Keith, how 'bout those pictures :D?

The rating is more of an safety issue. Probably the max Kubota recommends with the FEL at full height.

I'd put 220 pavers and see what it'll do!!

110 pavers filled the width of the bucket, stacked soldier, 2 deep and 5 high. Any more and I'd just be making a pile.

And I didn't want a seal to blow and have the bucket come crashing to the ground, breaking a bunch of my stones, possibly smooshing my foot (though I wear steel toes), and putting my tractor out of commission.

650+# sufficiently made my point...and sufficiently compressed the front tires...

Pictures before I put the geo-fabric and stone down. Don't have any since. Will post finished product this weekend.

Things of note:
---I'm balding. Bummer.
---The shirt makes me look fatter than I really am. I think. I hope.
---I stayed out of the tree driplines, so HOPEFULLLY I haven't hurt them. I did pull some roots out, but my lot was forest, so EVERYWHERE I dig, I pull roots out.
---In the "Jumping Jack Compaction" picture, note the spoils pile in the back...that is the dirt I pulled out of the hole. The pile is a little deeper than it looks in the picture. I'll pick the organics out and use it elsewhere in the yard later.

Other things of note:
---This project would have been very nearly impossible without my BX. I would have over 40 hours with a pick-axe and shovel just to move the dirt!
---With the completion of this project, I will have saved a DOCUMENTED $15,000 on labor I would have paid someone else to complete tasks I COULD NOT HAVE DONE without my BX over the course of 3 seasons. My total investment in the tractor is $21,000, which includes annual dealer service.
---Once I complete the PATH going to this patio (next spring, probably), I will have completely and entirely PAID FOR my tractor simply through its use on specific projects...I'm not including lawn care which I would have bought a Crapsman to do anyway. I'm basing this on VALUE of certain tasks performed, not on machine hours.
---I would put the quality of the work I've performed on par with any professional...sometimes more-so since it is EXACTLY how I want it.
---Nothing has broken on my tractor in 220 hours of normal to heavy use.
---All this feels GREAT. I LOVE working on these kinds of things.

And don't ask me why every picture my wife took is leaning to the right. She takes exceptional pictures, but seemed to be a little dizzy here.

I built a 12 x 12 patio not long ago. I did not have my 2350 so everything was done by hand. That and all the grass that needs to be cut justified the purchase of the BX. After a few loads of dirt the fiancee' even helped in looking for a tractor.

Andy

My 3030 with 60" bucket was the bestest and most expensive wheel barrow I've ever had.......but wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!:D

Hi Keith -

Great project! My neighbor just finished a paver walkway with a semi-circle patio attached. I was out mowing and saw a dumptruck of Class 5 get dropped at the edge of his driveway. Then came the old wheelbarrow and shovel and he and his wife and kids were moving this stuff. I finished up mowing, popped on the loader and joined in the fun. It was all they could do to keep up with the smoothing of the Class 5 as I dumped the material. He says he owes me one. :)

Looking forward to the updates.

...dumptruck of Class 5...
I could not fathom moving the stone by hand. I wouldn't even do it. I wouldn't even START it.

Not that I'm a pansy or anything (at least I don't THINK myself a pansy), but when I was unloading my trailer, I'd always end up with those last ~300# of stone that I couldn't get out of the front corners with the tractor (shoving the pile up against the front stakeside...see attached and you can picture it...). I'd have to break out the transfer shovel and scoop it into the bucket. That stone (we call it 21A...graded crusher-run) is HEAVY when you get a good shovel-full of it. In all my years being around it, I hadn't spent much time actually handling it. When I'm done filling the FEL bucket by hand, I think about the other 19,000# (3 trailer-loads less the 300# per I couldn't power-load) I DIDN'T have to move by hand!!!

I passed a neighbor on the road this past spring with a 300# B&B Pear tree in the back of his Explorer. I beat him home and had the BH installed about the time he pulled into his driveway. I drove straight over there, got the tree out of the truck by shuffling it into the FEL, then dug the hole for him in about 8 minutes. We backfilled and had the tree installed and watered in under 30 minutes. He was planning on spending the afternoon on that project...

You make friends fast when you are able to do things like that for your neighbors. Feels good, too.

It gets to the point u have to do that to get enough seat time.

Keith -

I told my wife when I bought the tractor that my wheelbarrowing days were over. Been true thus far...

Keep us updated on the project - looks great so far!
