ak47 range report

I only have 2 of the AK style rifles. One is the Chinese made Poly Tech and is called a Legend AK-47/S and the other is a Bulgarian SA95. They both function very well and are reasonably accurate. They most certainly are not sniper material, but not too bad. I've never had a stamped receiver version but I don't think you'll wear one out. A few years ago I bought a case of 100 thirty round ribbed steel mags. I probably paid too much, but I believe they ended up costing me around $7.40 each after shipping.

I have 3 or 4 SK style rifles as well. I know two of them are Russian and the other is an odd looking rifle with a stock that looks homemade (but isn't) that has a thumbhole in it. That odd SK actually takes AK style mags in it's original configuration. I thought that made it somewhat unique.

I'm sure you'll like your rifle. I don't hear too much about the AK rifles jamming or failing to feed. I generally just hear about how it's impossible to get them to be tack drivers.

WASR "series", yes, however, wiki also: "The WASR-10 is a post-ban version of the AKM assault rifle in 7.62x39mm caliber." AKM. I had no intention of getting into a disagreement with you, but rather trying to clarify, as the AK designation is misapplied often.

My point was that it was an AK pattern rifle.. and not an older variant like an sks.. etc.

In the future.. i think I'll just keep the range reports for the firearms forums I belong to...

Funny you mention the sk that takes the ak mags. i was at a gun-shoot a while back and there was aguy with a chinese sks ( pointy spike bayo and all).. and his had an ak detachable mag with a real loose catch.. after about 3 shots the mag would drop out.

My guess was it was a cut-n-paste fabrication after the internal box mag was removed.

amazing how easy those sks are to take apart. I have a black synthetic monte carlo stock for one of my sks.. though I've never dropped it in yet..

I'll probably buy a Yugoslavian AK with an underfolder stock at the next gun show. I don't know a whole lot about the AK's, but I think the Yugoslavian is supposed to be one of the better quality variants.

If there's anyone on here that has a lot of experience with AK's, what are some of the more desireable variants?

I recently bought an underfolder. I wish I had gotten a fixed stock or side folder. The thin buttstock is very awkward to aim with as there is really nothing to get a cheek weld on. Shooting with the stock folded is really bizzare and cumbersome at best.

Micropilot,
Thanks for the feedback about the underfolder.

Almost hate to post on this one as it has gotten somewhate ANALlytical, but in the intent of the OP I will. I have what I will loosely identify as a AK47, and I have been on the receiving end of one and thankfully they missed, it is more precissly a Chineese MAK 90. It has the longer/heavyer barrel and a bigger stock. Fits me better. It is a blast to shoot and fairly economical as far as ammo. My son and I like to go small appliance hunting with it. When I'm asked why I bought one I say I say "because I wanted to see what one sounded like from the right end and because I can".

A really good friend of mine was on the receiving end of an AK in Nam and loves to show how they won't hold a good pattern by raising his shirt. He was leading his squad into an opening and crept forward to make sure it was clear. When he thought it was clear he stood up to signal his squad and took 7 (yes, seven) hits in the back. Everyone in his squad scrambled for cover and returned fire except for one guy; the only black guy in his squad. That guy belly crawled out to Wayne and dragged him back to safety and had their radio guy call in air support and a medi-vac copter. Wayne spent 3 full years in VA hospitals and was on a colostomy bag for almost 4 years. He claims his first experience off the colostomy bag was worse than getting shot (I'm sure he's kidding) because his first meal was a big bowl of hot chili.

Anyway, other than refusing to stop using the negative slur by which he called then enemy (starts with the letter "g"), he has no ill will towards anyone; the government, military nor even Nam. He shot my Poly Tech because it is supposed to be one of the better AK style rifles just to see if he could "hold a better pattern than the g***" who shot him. He did and said he was glad the other guy didn't have a better rifle! :D

Some years back, I had an AK-47, Chinese manufacture I believe. It was before all the bans(at least here in Calif). It was a really fun plinker, especially considering how cheap the ammo used to be. Never did have it jam. It came with three magazines. I even took one apart, cut it down, and made up my own five round version. It worked just fine too.

It shot very well with a scope. I found a scope mount that mounted to the side of the receiver, and curved up and over the top of the receiver. Three new pins replaced three of the original receiver pins.

I put a 3-9x40 Simmons scope on it. With soft point hunting ammo, it made decent groups. got an antelope in Wyoming with it, at about 150 yards. Got some funny looks from my buddies carrying that out in the field.

I popped off a couple rounds at about 400 yards(scope was zeroed at 150). You could really see the drop! Did same with a 30-06; totally different...

I liked that scope mount better than the ones that replace the rear site and use EER "pistol" scopes...

Dargo,
Glad to hear that your friend made it. I still miss my best buddy after all these years. I have studied the whole Nam issue and realize all the mistake that were made. Ho Chi Min studied in the US and came to us first to get the French out of thier country. We've seen what great friends they are. The Vietneese fought many wars for centries. They even kicked the Chinees butts. I still respect myself and my fellow comrades for standing up for what we thought was the right thing to do in those days. Our polititions were idiots. Gee, they still are, and I mean both sides of the isle.:D

I had a early version M16 over there and it was a real piece of junk. I quaified on a beautiful rifle, M14, and then got issued a Matel when it mattered
