seal for fecon/rexroth motor

Well I would say that not it then. How many hours on the rental unit? Wonder if it is a restricted case drain line/ filter ? Could the case drain hose be damaged or a pluged coupling?

What about the possibility of a shaft or bearing problem?

It has been my experience that when a hydraulic motor spits seals out it is because of internal leakage . How many hours are the motors usually good for on a mulcher under ideal circumstances ?

thanks for the suggestions...I'm pretty puzzled buy the whole thing.

I replaced the case drain filter on the PT-100 before I put the new seal on...and my case drain hose "seems" fine...the one thing I'm suspicious of is the QA- coupler on the case drain...it seemed hard to get the "female" end of the QC to click on to the male coupler from the fecon. Perhaps the center push in piece on the male coupler need some tweeking...

My 4810 will be back up and running next week, and I need to go back and finish that mulching job- so we'll see if I blow another seal...

To their credit, my local FECON/ASV dealer MB Tractor did the right thing and only charged me one day of rental (had it for 3 days, but only worked for 9 hrs)

is there a simple way to tell if the flow on a hydraulic hose is restricted? My case drain hose seems fine- no crimps, kinks, etc... flow meter or pressure guage?

I have had the inner liner of hydraulic hose come apart on a backhoe attachment and obstructed the the quik couplings ,they where hard to couple up. Also the case drain on my rig is the easyest to couple the five on the machine. The flow meter/ pressure gauge tests would tell you a lot about whats going on. High pressure low flow = obstruction in the line above the meter/ gauge. High flow high pressure = internal leakage in the motor.FYI it also pays to check around on price for motor parts ect. The Cat dealer wanted over $3000.00 for track motor that Vemmer/ASV sold for $1865.00 for the same rexroth motor another ASV dealer wanted $2200.00 also time get the motor shipped was the same 2 days.

Hello TMTS,

We use Rexroth motors on our machines also (variable displacement, axial-piston type). From what I understand, whenever a seal blows on our motor, it's because of a back pressure on the drain line that is higher than the seal can take.

Such back pressure may happens when:
  • the drain line coupler disconnects (as oil has nowhere to go, pressure rises and seal blows);
  • the drain connects to a drain line that is not big enough;
  • the filter on the drain line gets clogged;
  • the drain line connects with some other line that might cause back pressure (connecting a drain line with a return line is usually not a good idea for this reason, but I doubt ASV would do such thing);

If none of these reasons apply to your situation, then I hope your Fecon and ASV technicians will be able to find what might cause that back pressure. Let us know what they find: it might be usefull to diagnose similar problems in the future.

Good luck

Or splits the motor in half, LOL my fecon cutter blew right in half today man does the oil come out fast LOL Bobcat mechanic was standing right there. He just shrugged his shoulders and took it off and took it in for warranty(again).Motor wore out in 250hrs. Had a bad week with the Bobcat, very bad.

I put my Fecon (w/ new seal) back on my regular ASV 4810 and ran it pretty hard today (grinding up a big pile of hardwood tops that had been sitting for 2+years) for 2 hrs...seal seems fine. So I can only come to the conclusion that its a problem with the PT-100 that I rented...I give the 4810 a few more hours of running the Fecon before I am sure that it was the PT, but it seems to be the case...

-best of luck Westshore...

Hey W,

Sorry to hear about that. We did see that happening last Spring. It was on the first DAF-180 we sold in Vineyard Haven, MA. Back then, we were not too strict on the quick coupler replacement for the drain line. Well, after about 4 years running without problem on a Gehl 7810 (2004), the quick coupler did happen to disconnect during work after the line got tangled in bushed/small trees: Not only the seal blew off, but the whole motor housing cracked. Not cool.

Maybe adding a T with an check valve set just at a slightly higher pressure than the one going on the drain line would be a (dirty) workaround. If too much back pressure on the drain line, spill oil in the frame, or in a dedicated spill tank. But then would need something to alert the operator (horn, light, signal in the cab...).

Just need to think now about a way to offer that in a cost effective manner... ;)
