I'll bet Chrysler Financial owns it, and that they are a separate company. If Chrysler the car maker declares bankruptcy, it does not necessarily follow that Chrysler Financial is going to be part of the court proceedings, or that they will renegotiate your contract. The corporate world is very good about protecting their interests. Our interests, not so good.
On the bank loans themselves, Ford is unique in that they own their own finance company; Ford Motor Credit Co. GM only owns 49% of it's arm, GMAC Financial Services and Cerberus Capital Mgt. LP owns the other 51%. Cerberus also controls Chrysler Credit/Chrysler Financial. The Service Contract part of these companies are a bit more confusing to explain, but they are separate from the actual companies themselves. Heck, for possibly the first time in history it may be safer to have a service contract on your vehicle from one of the larger and extremely financially sound service contract companies. But, there again, that is a minefield as well. Some of those that appear strong and claim they are strong are working desperately behind the scenes to get capital, find a buyer, or contemplating going under. Because of CA's I can't make any list here online. If you have an aftermarket vehicle service contract and want to know if it is a strong one, feel free to PM me and I'll tell you what I can.
Oh boy, GM stock was $2.75 a bit earlier when I looked and Ford was $1.75.
