Gear drive vs hydro

Jake, by that statement you are kind of implying that this is the best thread going at TBN right now.

I was actually just trying to get the 'meat' thing going here again. No talk of beating dead horses in awhile, or flies buzzing or anything.

I don't get that one. Oh, wait, I think I remember something about a speed calculation or something, never mind. And I wouldn't intentionally imply that the thread I was involved in was better than any other... stammer-stammer.., of course...

I've used both and for my situation I like hydro:)

YIKES! I may have to close the thread!:eek::eek:

Wait MR!, Don't close it yet, I haven't made my stupid comment yet!

Gear drive vs hydro? - I prefer .....neither! for FEL work that is.

I'll hop in the Case 580 with TC drive/power shuttle for loader work.
NOTHING can touch that for ease of use.
Imagine your car (with automatic trans) with a FEL on it.
Put it in drive and go. Need to push into a pile of whatever - push on the gas pedal more. Shift into reverse and push the gas pedal.
No dinking with dual HST or pivoting pedals combined with trying to coordinate the separate hand throttle for a specific working RPM high enough to give adequate hyd flow, but will waste fuel.

However, change the context of the question, such as for cutting grass -
HST is the only way to go.

Uh oh, you are going on the HST Secret Police list now!

I think that might depend on the grass. When I mow the pasture in the picture below, which is probably 10 acres (+ or - 10 acres.....I'm terrible at estimates...lets just say about 5 hours worth) I put it in the right gear, set the throttle lever at the right rpms and never touch a pedal or lever again until I'm done. The only way to make it easier on that is to get someone else to do it.

Or on the hydro you could just set the cruise control. And if you just so happen to mow an account with very bad ruts, ditches, washes etc, you never touch a peddle other than forward, a little more or a little less depending on how big the ditch. ;)

Ditto that.. i pull into my pasture, unfold my batwing, set rpm and then prop my feet up on the tranny till the field is clean.. then throttle down.. kill the pto, fold the wing and pull out of the field..
