Oops! My mistake. I read it again. Still, coming out of the apartment or driving up and seeing it, kinda that same, to me. Stepping into a situation. Either way, unpleasant business.

Mind you this was a few years back.. but i think castle doctrine would have still been in effect. Our appartment had a carport attached to the house, with a storage and laundry room on the other side of the car port.. so you could walk from the living room out onto the porch, thru the carport ( closed on 3 sides ) to the laundry room.. all under same roof and on same slab, without actually going outside.

The thief's were backed up into the carport!

I literally heard somthing and opened the door and was right there maybe 6' from the car, and 15' from one of the guys.

I did feel threatoned, and was standing in the doorway to the rom I had just exited.. even unde rold castle doctrine.. I think my need to retreat was satisfied since I was in my house... in any case.. the situation turned out well.. as he approached, I started to draw ( grabbed the handle of the gun ).. and he stopepd and fled... when he did that.. i no longer had to do anything else... I was glad about that all the same.

Since then, florida law has been greatly expanded concerning victoms rights and i believe a lot more leeway would beavailable to a homeowner with a gun in that same situation.

Dang.. pointing a shotgun at a kid because you think he scratched your car!!! Those guys needed to be in jail! That's improper display of a gun if i ever heard of one.!

That was my post. When I came back to the car with my ice cream cone a big guy was standing between our car and his car, blocking me from getting into the car. He said, "You bumped my car with your door." I said I didn't think so, but if I did I was sorry and if there was any damage, I would be glad to pay for it. He replied "I could have killed you just now" and pointed into the car next to ours. Sitting in the front passenger seat was another man, pointing a shotgun at me. That is when I took a few steps backwards and to the left to get behind his car. That meant the guy with the shotgun would have had to track me over his right shoulder, twist around and lean out of the window to keep his gun pointed at me. I wanted to get out of that bead without causing sudden movement. I was surprised how calmly I thought of moving out of the way. I was 16 years old. Once standing behind the car, had I had a weapon, I would have pulled it out and pointed it at the center of the big guy between the cars and tried to convince him to go away. After that, who knows? If he came at me, I would have shot him. If the guy with the shotgun would have tried to get out of the car, I would have shot him, maybe both of them, depending on who advanced towards me or who backed away. I will never know.

But, I did not have a gun. I was able to diffuse the situation with words and the guy decided not to shoot me for bumping his car door, which I maintain I did not. Therefore, I think he just wanted to mess with the little kid in the dark parking lot that night.

Anyhow, I doubt any jury in this town would fault me for moving out of the line of fire and then drawing my weapon in self defense.

In all actuality, had I shot the man, his family probably would have hunted me down and shot me, as that seems to be the tradition around here... you avenge your family, even if they were committing a criminal act!

Awww, what's this society come to? I'm going back to tractor talking. :)

Hopefully if you do carry a gun when you're not working, you still don't behave like this...

He could always move to a state that allows him to bring a gun to work ( in his vehicle ).

Things have been a little heated in this thread , i hope i hav'nt done anything to make it sound like us Aussies are not your brothers . I can't say any more about gun rights as ive given my word not too , but what i'd like to say is this .

Please remember that I/we will die beside you on the field to defend our homelands and our way of life just as we always have .

Some of the best people I ever met were from Australia. I did a lot of military operations with members of the RAAF and had a great time doing it. Good people and I have no doubt that you guys would be one of our top 4 allies when international crap hits the fan.

You really should come to the U.S. to visit. It's a diverse country and we aren't all rogue cowboys. We are God fearing, family loving and very hospitable (well, in most places anyhow). You and your wife would have a really good time. However, I don't recommend you eat at Outback Steakhouse, from what I've heard from native Aussies, they capitalize on America's ignorance of Australia's food and beverage choices through marketing schemes that aren't accurate !

If you go to Scotland, you'll end up trying haggis and getting all queasy anyway. :)

LOL!!! Yup, seen that episode of Bizare foods, don't want to try that!

But really it's not that bad here compared to other countries, I'm not a world traveler but have been to Eastern Europe a few times and believe me the people there are more untrusting of their fellow citizens than a lost tourist in a bad Bronx neighborhood.

Gun laws are very strict there of course but people are more scared there than here, I've seen people carrying their money in their underwear!!! when they park their cars in the city they disable them by removing some vital components from under the hood, not an uncommon site to see someone walking around with a distributor cap or rotor in their hand! (yea they still have them).

In reference to the original post, I saw a note elsewhere that jogged my memory. A nice little home defense rifle would be a HK94 9mm carbine. I have fired lots of rounds through one a few years back. Compact, no recoil, pretty accurate. Personally I would like a calibre like 45acp, but this si still a nice little package.

I'm sorry , i overlooked your question . I have never been to the US , but have always wanted too . We have been saving for a holiday there next year . We have now decided to go to Scotland instead as it has been made quite clear in these couple of threads about guns that the US is not a safe destination . If the locals who know the areas won't go outside without a weapon , what chance would we have without one ? I guess i just did'nt believe it was that bad over there , i thought it was being exaggerated here .

Its that bad, don't even think about comming! But if you change your mind forget about flying Oceanic Airlines.

The thing with our bar fights is that , whoever is still standing will put his hand out to help the other guy back up and then ask him what he's drinking :).

Then what's the point?

Good time for a sucker punch...hehe, then you are standing and get to buy!

Someone once said.. "never hit someone in anger..unless you're absolutely sure
you can get away with it." Ok who can name it? No googling!!

Its that bad, don't even think about comming! But if you change your mind forget about flying Oceanic Airlines.

How many islands with crazy magnetic fields and crazy "others" are there in the Pacific? Plus they already have camp set up, so how bad could it be?

But if you ended up on the island you would really need a home defense rifle. (Like how I tried to get the thread back on topic, hehe:))
