If not the switches check the electric fuel shut off at the carb

It's rare, but I had a mystery no run situation. Turns out that my almost new spark plug was defective.

Still sounds like ice in the carb bowl. Just because you put dry gas into the tank doesn't mean the ice would be gone. You are going to have to remove the bowl and dump it out. Under this theory, the ice is thick enough for the bowl to fill with just enough gas to start and run a few revolutions. Even if you put it into the headed garage it may run, but when the water freezes, it will hold the float in a locked position.

What model tractor is this? What engine? I dunno of any safety kill switch on a later model Cub tractor that allows the engine to crank but not fire. Is the spark plug getting wet? Does the plug(s) smell like gas?

Hello, I have checked the seat kill it fine, I have checked the ignition switch, its fine as well. It is definately a kill switch of some sort. I kept the brake engaged and it does the same thing. I need to worry about the oil pressure switch and the magneto. Something along the way is telling the engine to quit. When I turn it over the battery light has stayed lighted, but I checked the battery and I have plenty of power, even put a charger on it.

All advice is welcome.

Hello, and thanks very much for the advice, I am now narrowing the search..

I have learned that if the tractor stays running in the cranked position (and it does) it is most likely some sort of fuel shut off or celinoid. I am bypassing the fuel shut off switch under the carb to see if it will keep running. If so I will start to test systematicaly the different swithces and wires to the different shutt off switches.

this is a pain in the %$#$^

Thanks so much for all of your advice and if you have any more I will check back b4 I start doing the testing.

Happy Holidays to everyone

How cold is it at your location? Were you running at reduced throttle when it quit? That sounds like 'carburetor icing'.
In the general aviation arena (gas engines) we run at cruise between airports. But just before we reduce power for the traffic pattern, we always apply carburetor heat. I forgot and lost my engine on my first flight. If you want to know why this is necessary, review the theory of carburetors and the heat loss of expanding gases.
I've had my leaf blower and chain saw quit for the same reason in close to freezing temperatures. In both cases I brought the engine in the house to warm up. It started right up when I brought it outside again.

Hey Dupa,,I experienced about the same problem on my John Deere rear engine,,as long as I kept the key turned in the starter engaged position it would keep running...I jumpered the plug on the switch and diagnosed the switch was bad...Only a thought...

Sounds like a key switch now.

I have an 1810 that would die once it got warmed up. It would just stop. Cool it off and it would start back up again until it got hot, then it would die again. It turned out to be a bad ignition module by the flywheel. If this is crapping out before it gets warmed up or won't start at all, then I would think that checking for spark would verify or eliminate the ignition module as a culprit.
