Just a thought, But do you have a small fuel filter? I had a similar problem with the Kohler in my LT. I must have had ice in the filter that caused it to die quick then it melted and the water/gas mix made it die slow later.. this is a pain but just remember you have a nice rig there and when you figure this out you will be smarter for it!;)

Hello NH Dragon, I do have a small fuel filter and am I have purchased a new one, larger kohler after market Im sure. Got it from my Cub dealer locally.

I thought what the heck couldn't hurt to try it. I did dump 1.5 small containers of dry gas in the tank when this first went down.

I will keep yal posted on my journey, I really do like this machine and it has all the bells and wistles I could want, except for a post hole digger, I plan on planting wine grapes, need to get me one of those.

Have a good one and keep up the great advice, I appreciate it!

Hey Dupa,

I had a similar problem with my 5252. In my case it was the fuel filter. I forgot all about that episode.

Hope it could be that simple?

Good Luck.

May be time to take carb apart as you may have something in there clogging fuel flow; but that does not explain the key in crank position, keeping it running before.

You say you have spark; changed plugs. You say you have fuel flow.
All safety switches check out ok.
Does key switch check out alright?
Make sure all wire connectors are good; remove all connectors, make sure they are clean and tight and a good idea while apart is to lube with dielectric grease to maintain good connection.
Are all relays working properly.
Fuses seated properly ( do same as wire connections above)
Keep battery fully charged, as low battery volts will keep engine from running.

Lightly tapping carb may loosen debris enough to start it, but if it does, clean carb to remove debris.

You have tried the "remove gas cap" trick to make sure it is vented.

sounds like it will end up " why didn't I do that first" scenerio

Have you tried removing air cleaner and spraying starting fluid? If it runs on ether, sounds more like fuel delivery problems.

Dumb question but has your warranty run out on this tractor? I totally agree that this should not be happening on a tractor with 160 hours on it. I think I'd be raising holy **** with the dealer I bought the tractor from as much as these darn things cost. My neighbor bought a new Cub Cadet partly on my recommendation and he had all kinds of issues with the trans when he first bought it. I have an '89 1810 that has been reliable but my engine was just about to drop the governor but I opted to put a rebuilt engine in it because it's built like a tank, something I can't say about the newer ones. I did have a problem on mine with the ignition module going bad. It would run great til it warmed up then it would die. Let the engine cool off and it would be fine until it heated back up again.

Hello to everyone, as my third snow storm approaches I am getting closer, I hope to a solution. Like I said I'm no expert and I did swallow my pride and had my niehbor who is a full time mechanic stop by to give his two cents.

He sprayed the starter fluid (advised earlier by a fellow member) and the tractor would fire right up. I tried to replace the fuel filter and although correct by Kohler's stand point the fuel filter and line were much bigger.

Always nice pissing gas all over your self and the garage floor. Yeah!

Went to Napa and got a replacement that fit the fuel line. Did that and some limited success. The tractor when on choke now will run, all be it a little rough. When I choke down it dies. Must be more crap in the fuel line going towards the engine. My assumption.

Anyone have good advice to drain and clear the fuel line from the fuel filter forward to the engine?

PS: There is a metal fuel filter looking device approx same size 6" in front of the fuel filter is that my next replacement??

All adive welcome

Have a good one Dupa Stubborn Patriots Fan!

I will put money on a carb that is in need of being disassembled and cleaned. Be careful when removing; do not force any adjustment screws; remove all metering jets; use air to blow all passages; buy some carb cleaner in an areosal can to clean parts. Reassemble making sure carb to block is tight. After a little adjusting, it will run fine.

Have you disassembled the fuel pump? check diaphram and make sure it is good. When you unhook the fuel line from the carb and crank it, do you get a good fuel stream? Let fuel flow into a clean container while it is unhooked from the engine; shake fuel tank as you are filling container, if you notice debris in fuel; clean tank out best you can.

That would be good but unless there is an ice jam that killed the pump or it just went bad I would look in the carb bowl. I had a chainsaw that was given to me and the guy said it was the fuel line, I replaced it and it still would not run. I had to take the carb bowl apart and clean it three times before the thing would run right. It was nothing you could see but it starts and runs great now!;)
