If it were 75 degrees and sunny outside, probably wouldn't be any problem to fix.

75 and sunny yes that would be nice,, but 50 degrees and my garage (heated) did not solve it. Im having just a great time dissasembling and testing various switches and sutch. (not so much)

My second snowstorm has just rolled thru and 8 inches of the fluffy stuff just landed with no help from my cub. I have a cab and wiper for the cub and a brand new last year snow thrower 48" It is lovely seeing it sit there.

If you can't detect my sarcasm I am not happy. I thought I would have it figured it out by now.

I bought the cub to retire my JD lx176 but have had to recomission it and like a trooper has saved my bacon.

Reluctantly I think I:mad: need to bring in my neighbor who is a mechanic (pride totally lost)

Happy New year everyone!

When I was stumped on my dead Cub Cadet, I had to trailer it to a Cub professional who figured out that the almost new plug was defective. There are times when a fresh perspective from a knowledgeable person is very valuable and avoids more useless aggravation.

I have a picture of my Dad, brother in law and sister peering at a Cub Cadet that quit in the driveway one cold December day in the mid to late 1960's. Never fun to figure these things out in the cold.

Hi Will, this is not a diesel, it is a kohler gas. I think 25 horse.

PS. I already changed both plugs even though they did not look too bad when I changed them thinking maybe it was that.

No luck, it really feels and sounds like a fuel shut off or a kill switch. I continue on.. I do need a professional but I am stubborn.

Hey Dupa,

Sorry about your dilemma. What model Cub is this?
I've replaced a couple of ignition modules that acted similar, but generally the tractor would run just long enough to get you as far from the tools as possible, then quit.

Yours sound like a newer model (25HP) and I don't think they used the same ignition module, but they gotta generate a spark somehow.

I found the cheapo Harbor Freight spark indicators to be a good troubleshooting tool. They light up if you have spark and the tractor will run with them in place.

I feel you pain, I got up early yesterday, headed out to clear the drive, the tractor won't start and has a flat front tire, leaking fron the sidewall, I was able to jump it and get enough air in it to clean the drive, but I gotta replace two tires today, dry rot....

Curt

Good Luck

Hi Curt, thanks for the info this is a 5252E the more I read about this series of tractor the less enthused I am about my purchase last year. I put 56 hours on it so far and it has been quite good until now. I have only 160 hours on this tractor and should not have problems like this.

The good news and the bad news is that after removing the fuel selenoid and messing around with it the tractor fired right up. I also cleaned out and retaped a plug of 5 wires just below the spark plug and above the starter.

I got the tractor in the driveway again and 5 minutes into the work it slowly failed again.

This time the tractor died slowly sputtering to shutting down completly different than the first time.

Back in the garage and more fun to be had today.. All sugestion are welcome.

I must be getting closer, it ran for 5 min this time and a different type of failure this time (maybe?)

Do you have a good fuel flow to carb? Could be faulty fuel pump or a clogged fuel line. Is this a kohler courage engine? if it is; pull flywheel and replace flywheel key, known problem ( looks good, but) . I guess if you wanted to; remove fuel line from carb; temporary hook up of a fuel line with a funnel in top of it and fill with fuel to give you a gravity feed fuel delivery would allow you to se if it runs that way, thus telling you of a fuel soleniod or fuel pump or clogged fuel line.

Hi Dave, when I kept the key in the far right (crank position) it used to run so I did not think it was a fuel problem. I was checking the fuel selenoid for function and mistakenly turn the key to run position and gas was pouring out of the place where the fuel selenoid connects to the carb. I was pretty sure the gas was flowing fine.

As I said I had it running for 5-10 min yesterday and it died again much slower this time kind of choking out. I am testing different things now.

I kept the enging in crank position now..... and it does not keep running now. I might be back to checking more fuel related issues.

A fun hobby is starting to get me

All advice would be helpful :eek:many people have given me very good advice I am just a rookie and have have two left feet when it comes to being a mechanic.
