35 acres with home. Taxes almost 1k this year. Tax on homes/land here in 'Bama are relatively cheap,
but that's all that's cheap!
I moved here from Florida almost 2.5 years ago. Florida's land/home tax is relatively expensive, but it pretty much stops there, relatively speaking.
Alabama has income tax, Florida doesn't...all I can say is OUCH! Yeah, I knew this moving here, BUT, I was also told that I'd get pretty much all of it back when I filed. The person that gave me this information wasn't in the same tax bracket my wife and I are in! Again...OUCH!
Alabama taxes groceries at 4% in the town where we shop and 9% sales tax on anything else you buy. Florida's grocery tax is negligible and on some items, non-existent.
Alabama tags for an automobiles last year cost me over 300.00 (2 new vehicles). Florida would have cost me about 70-80.00. Some will say the difference is in the sale tax of the vehicle when you buy it. In Florida, they tax you straight up front, Alabama only pays about half the sales tax up front...HOWEVER, Lord forbid you move to Alabama with a new vehicle that you bought in Florida. They tax you again on it when you get your license plate! Talk about double whammy. There are no exceptions! OUCH.
Alabama has no lottery and never will, Florida has a lottery to help schools. I brought up that fact in a barber shop a couple years ago...you'd have thought I was the Anti-Christ

! I won't even go into that argument! I will say though that's it funny to see the line (yes, line) of cars at the FL state line for lottery tickets.
The majority of Alabama roads would be called pig trails in Florida and closed for traffic. Florida repaves roads that make Alabama's roads look new! Supposedly the taxes brought in on gas are to fix the roads. I haven't seen a road paved in my area since being here

.
I love it here and am not moving. Don't get my post wrong, I truly do love it here. I just get sick of politicians and Alabama State Tourist officials coming on t.v. stating how cheap it is to live in Alabama. Of course they are trying to get people to move here, but geesh, tell the truth! It took me 2 years of substantial pay raises with my company to get back to what I was making in Florida when we moved here, due to state income tax.
Florida has a special hunting/freshwater-saltwater fishing license for military retirees which costs peanuts. Alabama...nope. Don't even ask.
Florida has a special homestead exemption for military personnel who are disabled in the line of duty. Alabama...nope. Don't even ask.
Of course, not all is lost! There is no tax on horse feed or deer corn.
