You can take comfort in the fact that my 910 acres, house, farm equipment, cattle, and barns runs less than half or your 9 acres.;)
Oklahoma passed a lottery awhile back to help fund the schools:rolleyes:, I can't tell it has helped the schools, but it sure has made it more difficult for them to get school bonds passed to fund the schools. Everybody says "the lottery is supposed to fix that so why raise taxes?"

Finally, a real reason to support legislation creating a state lottery.

1800 sq ft house = $5000 on 5 developed acres. 105 undeveloped = $1900. 7% sales tax. Piggy back income tax meaning whatever amount you give the feds based on your percentage obligation, the state uses the same percentage on your fed tax amount and one of only 5 states to state income tax one's pension which in my case came to another $3400 tax. This totals to $10300. Does not include the .42 gas tax.

About $2000.00 per year paid every six months for 1 house and garage on 2+ acres and another house/garage/bank barn/smokehouse/machine shed on about 4 acres.

35 acres with home. Taxes almost 1k this year. Tax on homes/land here in 'Bama are relatively cheap, but that's all that's cheap!

I moved here from Florida almost 2.5 years ago. Florida's land/home tax is relatively expensive, but it pretty much stops there, relatively speaking.

Alabama has income tax, Florida doesn't...all I can say is OUCH! Yeah, I knew this moving here, BUT, I was also told that I'd get pretty much all of it back when I filed. The person that gave me this information wasn't in the same tax bracket my wife and I are in! Again...OUCH!

Alabama taxes groceries at 4% in the town where we shop and 9% sales tax on anything else you buy. Florida's grocery tax is negligible and on some items, non-existent.

Alabama tags for an automobiles last year cost me over 300.00 (2 new vehicles). Florida would have cost me about 70-80.00. Some will say the difference is in the sale tax of the vehicle when you buy it. In Florida, they tax you straight up front, Alabama only pays about half the sales tax up front...HOWEVER, Lord forbid you move to Alabama with a new vehicle that you bought in Florida. They tax you again on it when you get your license plate! Talk about double whammy. There are no exceptions! OUCH.

Alabama has no lottery and never will, Florida has a lottery to help schools. I brought up that fact in a barber shop a couple years ago...you'd have thought I was the Anti-Christ ! I won't even go into that argument! I will say though that's it funny to see the line (yes, line) of cars at the FL state line for lottery tickets.

The majority of Alabama roads would be called pig trails in Florida and closed for traffic. Florida repaves roads that make Alabama's roads look new! Supposedly the taxes brought in on gas are to fix the roads. I haven't seen a road paved in my area since being here:confused:.

I love it here and am not moving. Don't get my post wrong, I truly do love it here. I just get sick of politicians and Alabama State Tourist officials coming on t.v. stating how cheap it is to live in Alabama. Of course they are trying to get people to move here, but geesh, tell the truth! It took me 2 years of substantial pay raises with my company to get back to what I was making in Florida when we moved here, due to state income tax.

Florida has a special hunting/freshwater-saltwater fishing license for military retirees which costs peanuts. Alabama...nope. Don't even ask.

Florida has a special homestead exemption for military personnel who are disabled in the line of duty. Alabama...nope. Don't even ask.

Of course, not all is lost! There is no tax on horse feed or deer corn.

My 2800 sq.ft house on 10,000 sq.ft parcel in the city is around $3000 give or take $250 given the mill levy for the year. It does include everything. My two 10 acre lots each assessed as AG land with no improvement is about $30 each side. They are planing to make min AG lot to 20 acres rather than 10. I splitted in time so they'll be grandfathered in. Homesteading on 10 acre AG will be much cheaper than 1 acre home site. Property tax info are readily available on the net for Johnson County Kansas, and a lot of pretty people living on 10 acre horse farm if you can call it that pay in the neighborhood of 15 to 20 K per year:eek::eek:

Don't think the lottery will solve anything we started the first lottery in NH. many years ago ,property taxes on 35 acres and 10 year old 2200 sq ft house, $6500 a year no sales or income tax, rooms and meals tax 8%
car registrations on 4 vechiles $700 tax on bank interest 5%.
The reason they like property taxes so much is they have leverage if you don't pay they take your property, sales and income taxes are dependent on your income ( if you don't have any you don't pay) sales tax( if you can't afford it you don't buy) .They have you right by the B@//$
The lottery money all goes to the schools. Schools get more teachers more equipment more sports the more they get the more they Want.
Lame old excuse if they don't get the money your kids are going to suffer.
TIME TO HAVE A TAX REVOLT!

My CA property is $9000 per year, the previous owner paid $1200 per year. I do have Prop 13 protection that limits non-voter approved increases to no more that 2% per year

My WA property tax was stable for 2 years at $9000 and jumped by a third last year to $12000 and $12,800 this year. The assessor claims the property increased in value by 80% in one year and said my purchase price was not accurate... even though the property was on the MLS for some time before I bought it.

In a short answer - TOO MUCH

I agree with Kenstrac so for those who wish their state had a lottery don't believe that creating a lottery will reduce your taxes. NY State created a lottery many years ago to fund the schools so the taxes burden would be less on the tax payer. School taxes (paid in Sept. here) have continually gone up. Lottery money now goes into the states general fund without much of it going to schools in my opinion. The State has continually increased the number of lottery games such as scratch off cards and Mega Millions. Last count in the local gas station was about 50 different priced scratch offs. All these lottery games are fixed. They know exactly how many winners they have for each card and how much money they make on each one. These games are just another way to supplement the greed of the state by preying on the poor who think they will hit it big. NY's famous saying is "A dollar and a dream". With all these lottery games we should be paying NO taxes. Sales tax rate is 8% here. If I could collect the money the state makes in one day from one scratch off card I could retire. Also, the state has a monopoly on these games and won't let the public make or sell lottery game cards.
My county / local taxes due by Jan 31 are about $1300 for a small ranch house on 5 acres. School taxes paid last Sept. were about $1000. I do receive a veterans credit on my principal residence. One of my sons lives in a second home I own in another town and the combined school and county taxes are about $2800 a year for that house on 3 acres.
