Property Taxes ... How Much are yours

South Carolina has about the stupidest tax laws I've evr heard of, with my county(Sumter) leading the way in the stupid department. I got charged for $3,000 worth of improvments last year, funny thing is I DIDNT MAKE ANY IMPROVMENTS! unless you consider cutting grass and raking leaves "improvments". went down to the tax office to debate it and God help those mentaly challenged people at the tx office. that's all I can say. I am in the process of fighting a $10,000 increase on my farm land this year, which i know HAS to be a mistake, otherwise someone better sit me down and show me dollar by dollar why my farm taxes went up $10,000 from last year. oh, and we also passed some crazy law of a penny tax for county "improvments" which is about the most rediculous thing I've ever heard. it never ends around here and i think we have about the most incompitent people in our public offices. very frustrating to be a land owner where I'm from most of the time.

I agree with the notion that lottery doesn't help. Lottery is a tax on folks with poor math skills...

Maryland just passed legislature to legalize slot machines, mostly to save the horse racing industry. Gambling is simply not the answer. It will cost me in the end.

My rural land has 4 deeds, Taxes on one 7.5 acre plot of vacant land were$7.52, the 8 1/2 acre plot next to it with a junker trailer (gone now but that made it a residence) was $147.00, next year it will be $8.50. Gotta love rural Missouri!

Taxes on my Saint Louis suburb 1700 square ft. house are almost $1,200. Still pretty low compared to some of you guys.

It's hard to comprehend taxes you pay... vacant land here pays almost $150 street lighting and landscape assessment.

We should have platinum services for the taxes paid... instead, the property owner is constantly criticized for not paying enough.

I know a lot of people relocated to Nevada and Idaho... taxes drove some of them.

Don't forget that some of us moved to Texas. There's a saying that I here more and more, I wasn't born Texan, but I got here as soon as I could. :)

When I moved, U Haul vans were $2,000 to leave California, but if you rented here in Texas and were going to California, it was $400 for the same miles. So many people were leaving that they couldn't get enough vehicles for people to rent.

One of the things that really drove me crazy about the taxes in California was how the money raised with into the General Fund. Not for what they were taxed on. Roads were rated 49 out of 50 states. Here in Texas, taxes raised for roads go to the roads. They might repave a road every three years just to spend the money, but at least they are spending it on the roads and not some pet project to get more votes.

My property taxes when I lived there was just over $2,000 a year for a 1,000 sq ft house that had one bathroom on a 50 by 100 ft lot that backed up to a freeway and was under the landing path for Oakland Airport.

We don't have any street lights or sidewalks... but it was explained we drive on streets with lights to get here and that's why we have to pay...

City just sent out Business Tax Statements to thousands of Businesses, including Rental Property.

This year, they sent all the Rental Business tax statements to the rental address instead of the property owner... big screw-up.

They also changed the way the tax is paid... it's always been a gross receipts tax... no matter if you have a profit or loss... now they make you round up to the nearest thousand and pay tax on money you never received. Someone could have collected $1 and would have to pay tax on $1000.

Two years ago, the city wanted to pay taxes on my grading and clearing business... the only thing is, I don't have one... I only own a CAT D3 and Kubota TLB for my own use... not for hire.

Maybe it's time to head for Texas... Eddie and Steph... leave the light on for me.

1*Finally, a real reason to support legislation creating a state lottery.
1*We never had an income tax in Ohio till about 25 or 30 years .ago.
It was supposed reduce real estate taxes but instead property taxes keep right on climbing and so we became stuck with both taxes.
Later on it was decided a lottery would fix school funding but as time went on more and more of the lottery money was diverted from the schools to something else to where today the schools receive little if any money from the lottery .
However property taxes keep right on escalating.

2*Our county tax office would give yours a run for the money when it comes to ineptness .
They gave away 3 lots of my parents place to the state back in 1964.
As if that wasn't enough they taxed my parents on this land for 25 years after they gave it away to the state.
They had the rest of their property appraised anywhere from 2 to 3 times its true value.
Back in the early seventies they taxed me for a building that wasn't even on my land .
The building was 50 to 100 feet over on the adjoining owners land.
They billed me for years on a quarter of an acre that don't even exist.
When I received my tax bill and appraisal back in 1992 they had me down for 2 septic systems valued at 1800 each .
When I pointed out there was only 1 septic system they reduced the appraisal by 300 dollars so now I have been paying taxes on a 1500 dollar septic system I don't have for 16 years.
They taxed me on an 8x16 storage building until it depreciated down to nothing .
At that point instead of ceasing to tax me on it they discontinued allowing me yearly depreciation on it and revalued a building with no value on it to an appraised value of $500 which was about twice the original value they had on it and started charging me taxes on it again.
To add insult to injury come to find out that it wasn't ever legally taxable in the first place;but I paid taxes that weren't owed on it for 26 years .
It would be quite a feet for any county in the country to top this.

That same Hayward property would have been taxed around $6,000 if you would have bought it for $475k about two years ago!

$12,500 for 2 acres, house is 3200 sq. ft., well and septic, no sidewalks, or street lights. 7% sales taxes, plus income tax. Volunteer fire department. school taxes are about $8K of the $12.5K. They pump the gas for you, NO self service at the pumps, anyone want to move to NJ???
