TSC and Travellers Hydraulic Fluid

Good thread--

I know nothing about WMT Supertech oils and such but am tempted each time I walk by. Is it worth a look?

Considering I have two machines that take as much as 13g each of UTF oil per year.. plus 3 others that can take near 5g each.. then you look for a cheaper oil.

At about 20$ per 5g pail, who cars if the addative package only lasts 300 hours vs 600 hours compaired to the 50-60$ per 5g pails. I could theoretically change the oil 3x at the same price.. and thus have a cleaner sump.. but since I don't put 300 hrs on each machine.. I'm not running my add package out.. but yet I change the oils yearly to get rid of moisture.

This is very interesting in that I put maybe 75 hours on each of my tractors per year and change the oil once a year. If the WMT oil is rated the same as other oil and I'm not putting the hours on the tractor, I'm beginning to think this may be a better way.
Even the WORST of the oil out there today is probably better than the best of 20 years ago and WMT stuff is not junk but probably a good product?

Walmart oil is warren.. they are a pretty LARGE supplier.

I've been running the supertech oil in my 2002 NH 7610s since the 2nd year I've had it.. 1st year I used traveler TSC oil.. ( looks like it is warren oil too ).. Fast forward a couple years and NH oil is near 60$ for 5g.. and walmart oil is around 20ish$ for same... considdering I get less than a hundred hours on my high use machines when mowing.. I think it's safe to say the add package is still better than half there.. and I'm sure the tractor benefits from the sump cleaning...

With 5ys on that tractor on walmart oil now.. and no lube related failure,.. I think that is a quite positive sign. I did have a defect in a hyd valve pack repaired, but it was not lube related.. it was a bad pilot operated valve.. during the repair I asked them to check the rest of the hyd system out.. I figured if the walmart oil was damaging something.. it would show up... shop manager said the hyds were the best he'd seen in tractors in similar model lines.. all clean.. no sludge.. no apparrent wear.. pump met flow and pressure specs.. and relief was functioning at exact specs.

Quality oil has to do with the additive package, and then film surface scratch wear. Will the oil hold up under extreeme pressure. Just because you haven't experienced a gear train failure, doesn't mean that your gears, and related components aren't wearing more rapid with a qualified oil brand, but only minimumly qualified. The higher quality brands , especially the top brands, and synthetics are more resistance when the pressures get extreme, and the temperatures get hot. I use both also.:D

Good post. Unless someone posts some UOA here, corn oil would work too...LOL

You are forgetting that the oil in question meets or exceeds the ford M2C134 spec... does corn oil carry that rating?

Went to Walmart to buy Hydraulic Fluid and the ONLY fluid they carry is for jacks???

It was explained that not all Walmarts stock the same products...

So much for my second only visit to WM

The first time I changed hyd oil in my JD, I used jd The second time I used TSC and the next time I will use JD. The TSC stuff whines and is sluggish in the cold. My experience.

Did you ask for 'hydraulic oil'.. or for universal tractor fluid.

My local walmart does not stock 'hydraulic oil' either.. yet always has 4-5 5g pails of universal tractor fluid on the shelf.

A couple different manufacturers spec a different viscosity fluid for some applications.. like cold weather.. perhaps the UTF you bought from TSC did not meet the viscosity specs for the JD fluid you needed?
