oil for WOODS tiller

I purchased a GTC 52-2 tiller for my JD2210. I'll be changing the transmission oil soon and can't find any of the oil or grease recommended in the manual. For the grease I use Deere's SD polyurea grease in the U-joints, but for the oil it recommends either a straight 90W or 80W/90. One of the recommendations is Shell's Dentax 90, which I can't find. According to Shell's website, this oil has an API GL-1 rating. I can find several brands of GL-5 (or 4) in 80W/90, but nothing in GL-1. The manual doesn't specify an oil rating. Any recommendations? Thanks.

RECOMMENDED OIL
ESSO: Gear Oil CZ80 W/90
AGIP: F1 Rotra 80W/90
SHELL: Dentax 90
MOBIL: Mobildue C90 TOT AL: FT 90

Well, I emailed WOODS and here's their response:

"You use EP80-90 gear lube in both areas. Unfortunately engineering did not provide a drain plug for either area the only way to drain them would be to roll the tiller over and allow the oil to come out the fill plug hole."

When asked about a GL rating:

"Nothing special is required beyond it being EP80-90."

Amsoil has an 80W90 that meets EP specs and is compatable with GL-5 and 4, so that's what is going to be used. I must admit I was impressed with WOODS response to my emails. Only took a few hours for a reply.

Too bad you have to tip it over to drain it

. My Woods tiller has a drain plug. I bet you could put a drain plug in if you were so inclined.

Not uncommon anymore...

I about went out of my mind trying to figure out how to drain the oil out of the Briggs engine in my Cub Cadet mower before I determined that I had to turn it on its side. Obviously, you have to run all the gas out of the tank first, or it runs out too...

Just remember, some engineer got paid good money to forget to put a drain plug in it.

you might want to consider an evacuator pump. the oil can be sucked out of the gear box thru the fill plug hole.i have used this device at work on our equipment with no drain plugs

90w gl-1 oil is available from napa in a 5g pail as part number 65-205.. and a 1g jug as 65-201
